Wrapping on this very cool run of what we've deemed the Cactus Needle, an exclusive stiletto design for @scar.mami

Some stills shot as part of absolutely gorgeous media coming up from @jinfinitemedia which also covered this project. Jacob captures what I call the "hand of the creator" in an almost effortless way. So good.

All similar but not quite the same! I always love when my friends let me throw stuff at the canvas. Looking forward to some super cool custom print kydex for these and a final media presentation. by @desertrainforge

An introduction!

My name is Jules, I'm a bladesmith and knifemaker from Buckeye AZ.

In 2003, I made my first knife shaped object in a pit forge and I was hooked. My first Damascus weld in 2005, my first demo and show in 2006, travelling around the US to work and learn with industry greats in 2007, and internships through 2012. From every ren faire and rawhide western town to every nook and internet forum I just wanted more.

After getting back from about a ten year hiatus, I'm excited to share my work with all of you and continue the journey. It's been quite the ride and we're just getting started!

Damascus, Ho!

Stoked to finally get my @housemade.us forge assembled! It's been a BAZILLION degrees out in Arizona so it needed to wait while I survived the summer out in the shop. Forging weather at last!!

I've been a coal forge guy for 20 years but that just won't cut it for what I need to get done on a professional level at this point. Already have a bunch of billets prepped for some high end cutlery.

Tried the DIY method on the gasser thing. For the time and money required, there's no question that Brian's work on the Appollo is 1000% the move. by @desertrainforge

“Food had power. It could inspire, astonish, shock, excite, delight and impress. It had the power to please me... and others. This was valuable information.” - Bourdain

My good friend Chef Scott Davis flew in from Sacramento after helping me t&e some food preparation cutlery the last few months. He and his partner Mia prepared a wonderful experience for my family. Savory, sweet, citrus, rich, ephemeral flavors all pulling and pushing in a fairly simple yet balanced dish. Beautifully plated, making it look so easy.

It's been five years since Scott has last been here to cook for us and asked me to design and produce this knife. In a way I think I realized that I was just as afraid of designing and producing this blade as I was excited about it. Expertise is clearly discerned when you see experienced hands work, and watching him use this knife, I've had to accept the reality that I am designing tools for a craft far past my personal understanding. In a way it's a leap of faith. I've felt this phenomenon before but never amplified in any application like it is in culinary.

This is the Warhorse. The original flagship is CPM Magnacut, Hawaiian Koa, Purple Heart, with a Leapordwood scabbard. Although this one is spoken for, this design will be a production model going forward. Stay tuned 🔪 by @desertrainforge

Telling a bit of a story with this one, and experimenting with some resin!

EDC in 63.3hrc Magnamax with a custom resin infused handle. Driftwood from the Pacific Ocean, stabilized. Blue, white, and gold color motifs between liners and pins. For a fella well traveled who always came home to the west Coast of the best country that ever was!

I am not a chef. I am not an expert in food preparation nor in using the tools involved in it like some knifemakers are.

However, over the preceding months, I've been investing a lot of time and effort into understanding what goes into these tools. I have many of the hard skills required but didn't quite "get it". I'm still not quite there, but I'm recognizing my flaws and lack of understanding and letting the professionals guide me.

Thankfully I have a passionate professional chef in the family who I have been relying on with respect to both performance and design requirements. In the next couple weeks I'll be able to get feedback on this iteration and finalize some things to nail down the Warhorse design.

10" full chef in Magnacut. Handle in stabilized koa and purple heart. Heat treat personally verified and conducted in an aerospace metallurgy lab. Were close to some heirlooms, fellas. by @desertrainforge

Little ditty in Magnamax for one of the fellas! Absolutely pleased with this stuff and exciting to work with some of the best. Scary sharp and excellent retention.

Stabilized spalted tamarind with turquoise trustone just goes so hard. Loving some of the surface treatments I've been exploring, I think they add some great personality to these. by @desertrainforge

Super badass capabilities of @housemade.us and @brodbeck_ironworks kit at work here. Getting super flat profiles and not missing a beat with surface grinding this Magnacut chef. Not a bad learning curve at all. Can't wait to put this to use on some batch work. by @desertrainforge
