Ending the week with an award!

We’re delighted that @designengineuk has won Architect of the Year award for @winchestercollege’s swimming pool at the 2026 Structural Timber Awards, held in Birmingham on Wednesday evening.

Opened to students earlier this year, the pool completes the final phase of our Southern Campus masterplan for the College. The award recognises our close collaboration with structural engineer @arupgroup.

Spanning the six-lane pool, the folding cross laminated timber roof establishes a new benchmark as what the design team understands is the world’s longest-span folded plate timber roof, without precedent in the UK or Europe.

Our thanks to Winchester College, Arup and the wider project team, including project manager @selwayjoyce_pmqs, quantity surveyor McNaughts, services consultant @skellyandcouch, landscape consultant @lucinsider and planning consultant Adams Hendry Consulting.

We're looking forward to sharing some new photos of the project recently captured by @richchiversphoto. In the meantime head across to our project page to read more about the swimming pool and wider sports centre head over to our project page (link in bio).

Progress continues at @emanuel.school with the new Science & Dining building looking crisp in the autumn sunshine.

This week's glimpse of the terracotta façade was captured by director Richard Jobson who was visiting site alongside Project architect Matt Vowels.

We're really pleased with how the building is coming together, as construction work moves into the latter stages with Gilbert-Ash.

Reflecting on a great moment for Winchester last week, as @winchestercitycouncil approved plans for a new Lido at River Park. 🎉

@designengineuk has been proud to support local campaigners and be part of the successful SeaLanes bid, preparing concept designs and sketch visuals exploring how the site could be transformed into a vibrant destination for the city.

The proposals bring together a new Lido, café, padel courts and splash park, with opportunities to recycle and reuse materials from the existing buildings, helping to create a sustainable new development for the people of Winchester.

The council’s decision was guided by the ambition for the site to act as an ‘opportunity...to offer joy and new memories to cherish for future generations’ Martin Todd, Leader of Winchester City Council.

Creating places that bring people together, build community and create lasting memories is central to our approach to placemaking and design.

We’re proud to have played a part in helping to move this exciting vision forward.

🗣️ Looking back at last week’s Friday Feedback, Luke shared his passion for slip clay model making.

With the aid of prototypes he walked us through the process of how he creates scale ceramic models of his car.

From scanning the original, and using 3D printing to make the moulds - the number depending on the complexity of the final form - it offered a fresh take on model-making, something which is always of interest!
