Classic Chicago / Set on an idyllic Chicago street this home was restored to its former glory through careful restoration and thoughtful design choices. Historically appropriate windows, reproduced masonry details, and custom doors all reestablish the home’s story.

LOCATION • As much as we love aligning lights to centerlines and maintaining equal offsets, illuminating the verticals sometimes takes priority when a space isn’t symmetrical.

Take this bathroom: we intentionally located the recessed lights an equal distance from each door to make sure they were illuminated the same way which helps the space feel balanced.

Paying attention to these small details during the design phase makes all the difference when you’re in the space ✨

Lake Views / This classic lakefront home has many levels of outdoor spaces. The raised deck above used to be the favorite spot before this covered area was enhanced during the renovation. The once open decking was enclosed to manage water and an arched trellis was designed to frame lake views. Now even rainy days can be spent outside.

Screened Porch / Built and designed to be a sunny indoor-outdoor space this three seasons screened porch has collapsing sashes which can slide up and enclose the space during cooler months. The room is also equipped with heaters and an outdoor fireplace to keep it cozy even after the leaves turn. 🍂

Cherished and Collected / Our client had collected art, objects and furniture for years. When he moved back to his childhood apartment we reimagined the storied and personal space with their treasures. Here a vintage chair was given new life with an unexpected print. The clients art was arranged to create a vignette that draws you in. A curving plaster fireplace and plush rug create rich textures that whisper and let the clients personal artifacts shine.

What happens when an architect designs their own headquarters??

Mike Shively and team turned a 50-year-old vacant Chicago lot into an integrated studio featuring a client espresso bar, a communal workspace, and a booked Airbnb! Designing your own space is the ultimate way to show what your firm stands for.

Design Chicago Recap!

I had the opportunity to speak on two panels this year, both touching on ideas that are central to how we approach design at LWID.

Our first conversation explored color and our approach to using color to create spaces with longevity. For us, color is never considered in isolation—it’s about color alongside pattern, scale, texture, and contrast. A room can be bold and full of color while still feeling incredibly livable.

We love creating spaces that reveal themselves differently as you experience them—a colorful pattern might read almost as a solid as you pass by, while up close, you begin to see the individual colors and details within it. That balance allows a home to feel interesting and distinctive without becoming visually exhausting or tied to a particular moment in time.

Our second panel asked, “Is Good Taste Killing Creativity?” Good taste matters, but great design also requires technical skill, curiosity, listening, and the instinct to know when to push beyond what you already know works. Throw in something that doesn’t quite belong. Break a rule. Push beyond the expected.

The bonus was getting to have this conversation alongside some of my favorite people. It felt a lot like the conversations we have all the time—just with a lot more people watching!

Grateful to have been part of both conversations, to spend a few days surrounded by such a talented Chicago design community, and last but not least, to see rooms by two of my design besties at the Mart Show House! by @designenmasse

Coastal architects get to design for easy indoor-outdoor living. The Midwest doesn’t let you off that easy.

Episode 2 of the Midwest Architecture Road Trip takes us to Chicago with Mike Shively of En Masse Architecture & Design. We talk about how En Masse strives to have “100 percent” custom homes for their clients because anything less isn’t up to their standard! We talk about the Thompson Center, and why Midwest weather has built a legacy of master masons and finish carpenters.

Full Behind the Facade episode is live: Link in bio!
