The moment you leave home shouldn’t be the moment you stop feeling at home.

At Jo, we’ve seen this belief come to life through the work of our clients, including @goeslinggroup, @designenmasse, and @Kuchar_studio, who design spaces with people at the center.

Welcome to Jo by Design, our new monthly spotlight on the categories shaping how we live, work, and connect. First up: commercial. Swipe through →

The secondary bath may not receive the most attention, but it's part of the home’s rhythm, used by kids, guests, and anyone moving through the second floor.

At the Sedgwick residence, we wanted to give it the same level of consideration with glazed Zellige tile, Calacatta Macchia Vecchia stone, and a custom blue flower mosaic tile underfoot.

Bathrooms / The bathrooms at this classic Tudor revival home reflect both the architecture and the client. Classic, warm, elevated, and tailored in their design they look as if they could have always been there.

LOCATION • As much as we love aligning lights to centerlines and maintaining equal offsets, illuminating the verticals sometimes takes priority when a space isn’t symmetrical.

Take this bathroom: we intentionally located the recessed lights an equal distance from each door to make sure they were illuminated the same way which helps the space feel balanced.

Paying attention to these small details during the design phase makes all the difference when you’re in the space ✨

Handsome and collected, we chose to wrap this gentleman’s closet in a deep blue hue, layer in a vintage area rug, and apply a chunky grasscloth wallcovering on the ceiling for extra texture.

Have you ever taken a second look at the Thompson Center in Chicago?

Mike Shively credits this Helmut Jahn masterpiece as a huge influence on his journey to becoming an architect. Built in the 1980s it completely redefined what a civic building could be. By fusing a transit hub, retail stores, and office space around a massive glass rotunda it was designed to be a literal expression of government transparency!

Great architecture makes you look up and question what is possible. Next time you walk past a local landmark remember the incredible story behind the glass and steel.

Lake Views / This classic lakefront home has many levels of outdoor spaces. The raised deck above used to be the favorite spot before this covered area was enhanced during the renovation. The once open decking was enclosed to manage water and an arched trellis was designed to frame lake views. Now even rainy days can be spent outside.
