1996. Nearly 30 years. Countless projects. One enduring partnership.

Some of the most successful projects in commercial interiors are built on relationships that have been developing for decades.

For Abbey Glass and Carter Lauren, that relationship began almost 30 years ago and has since taken them across the UK, delivering projects for some of the country's most recognisable hospitality, leisure and care brands.

From JD Wetherspoon in Cardiff Bay to Premier Inn on the Isle of Wight and the Hotel Indigo Exeter, their collaboration has navigated everything from complex logistics and demanding refurbishment schedules to intricate glazing requirements.

And while the projects, specifications and challenges have evolved, the foundations of their partnership have remained the same: trust, craftsmanship, communication and a shared commitment to quality.

What does it take to keep British furniture-making alive for more than a century?

For @ercol_uk , the answer lies in a combination of craftsmanship, innovation and a commitment to making furniture that lasts.

Founded in High Wycombe in 1920, the fourth-generation family business continues to manufacture solid wood furniture in the UK, bringing together traditional woodworking skills and modern manufacturing technology.
But ercol's story goes far beyond its heritage.

From supplying furniture for Apple's London headquarters at Battersea Power Station to projects for Nationwide Building Society and Benugo, the company is bringing its distinctive approach to commercial interiors across workplace, hospitality and education.

In our latest Member Profile, we go behind the scenes at ercol to meet the people shaping its future, explore its approach to responsible timber sourcing and discover why supporting British manufacturing remains so important.

106 years of heritage. A continuing commitment to craft. And a clear vision for the future.

🎉 OPENING TODAY: Akira Back arrives in Rome!

Chef Akira Back's first restaurant in Italy has been unveiled at The St. Regis Rome, with interiors designed by House of Black.

And this is far more than a restaurant interior.

Inspired by Rome's hidden portals and layered history, House of Black has created a sequence of atmospheric dining rooms, each revealing a different chapter of the experience.

Think jewel-toned glass inspired by Roman cathedrals, dramatic burgundy and inky blue interiors, sculptural bronze detailing and carefully preserved historic architecture.

But perhaps the most personal detail?

Artwork by Young Hee Back, Chef Akira Back's mother, has been woven throughout the interiors, influencing the colour palettes and bringing an intimate family connection to this landmark project.

A major new chapter for Akira Back, an exciting project for House of Black, and a fascinating meeting of Japanese sensibility and Roman heritage.

The newly refurbished Black Horse & Rainbow in Liverpool’s Ropewalks district captures the spirit of the traditional British local, blending heritage, craftsmanship and contemporary hospitality into one welcoming neighbourhood destination.

Working alongside DGB Hospitality, Taylor’s Classics supplied a carefully curated mix of bespoke furniture, reclaimed pieces and classic pub details to help bring the vision to life. From made-to-measure deep-buttoned leather Glasgow bench seating to reclaimed copper tabletops, cast iron bases and authentic vintage accessories, every element has been chosen to create a space with genuine character.

The result is an interior that doesn’t just look traditional, it feels it.

A Victorian hotel with a new lease of life and furniture that feels right at home.

Just one block from the beach in Ocean Grove, New Jersey, Hotel Albatross is a beautiful example of how historic character and contemporary hospitality design can work together.

Originally built in 1881, the boutique hotel has been thoughtfully restored, combining original Victorian details with moody interiors, atmospheric lighting and a relaxed, modern aesthetic.

And it's the furniture that helps bring those different influences together.
Inside Out Contracts supplied a selection of pieces, including the Langley Side Chair, with its traditional bentwood frame and Vienna straw detailing, alongside oak-topped tables that introduce warmth, texture and timeless character.

The result? A hotel that celebrates its history without feeling stuck in the past.
The project also reflects Inside Out Contracts' growing presence in the US, supported by its recently opened New York office.

We’re delighted to welcome Rebecca Kelly, Creative Director at Jasper Sanders + Partners, as a new Design Insider columnist.

Rebecca’s work sits at the intersection of interior design, architecture and contemporary culture, with a particular focus on commercial residential projects across BTR, Co-Living and PBSA. In her new column, she’ll be bringing that perspective to some of the wider questions influencing how we design and experience spaces today.

For her first instalment, Rebecca turns her attention to the ‘third place’, those cafés, libraries, parks, pubs and music venues that exist somewhere between home and work.

As traditional third places face increasing pressure, workplaces and residential developments are creating sophisticated amenity spaces that offer many of the same opportunities for lingering, connection and chance encounters.

But there’s a paradox: are we recreating the social infrastructure of the city, while placing it behind a key fob?

Rebecca asks whether the future of amenity should be less about creating buildings we never need to leave and more about connecting us meaningfully with the places beyond them.
