Y5: Fabrica, Porto

Fabrica: factory, craftsman’s studio, workshop, fabric.

Fabrica takes the methodologies of both architecture and textile design in parallel to create a space with its own specific programme, fitted to its urban context. It combines the scales of both the body and the city. The project explores the dialogue between design control and loosing control through tailoring and surface dressing, which play as communicative capacities that inform the identity of the body.

At Fabrica, the textile industry becomes a catalyst for social change, a means of bringing together people from different walks of life and creating a space for dialogue and understanding through sharing of skills, stories, and traditions. In particular, with the commissioning of North African immigrants to work in the textile sector due to a proposed lack of labour in the near future by the Portuguese Textile Association (ATP)

The project uses graphical language of garment patterns, symbols and processes from both North African and Portuguese textiles and spaces are transformed into a structural garments. The spaces are designed following different processes like dyeing, loom weaving, seaming and sewing. Fabrica can be read as a synthesis of the architectural fabric of Boavista and the structural grid of the site. taken in Bartlett School of Architecture UCL by @desirel.arch

Y4: The Wedding House

Addressing issues of cultural, historical and ecological sustainability, The Wedding House is an adaptive host space that seeks to explore applications of sustainable material by using waste plastic and earth/clay together with other agents for temporally stable structures in Milton Keynes’ Tree Cathedral.

The project also seeks to raise significantly the profile of the Tree Cathedral site which serves as a pedagogical tool that reveals narratives of place, in this instance the MK’s Bletchley landfill site where plastic waste and clay will be sourced and Elfield nature park for its timber structure

Just as the heritage of building techniques and rituals are prioritized in the Ise Jingu Grand Shrine in Mie Prefecture, Japan; the proposal’s structure is disassembled and replicated with the same materials over time, concerned more with creating tradition for this space rather than physical continuity. The value of ritual will be used as materials to re-engage the general public with an adaptive host space and in turn dictate the design of these spaces. taken in Bartlett School of Architecture UCL by @desirel.arch

A JOURNEY ACROSS TIME
Remembered/Reimagined map of East Africa. (The salon of natural history and the appropriation of East African/Ugandan culture)

This map starts off with a timed mapping through my memory of East Africa and being back home in Uganda. Using different medium including African cartography like the Lukasa from Zaire, I introduced different layers that have been imposed on the East African/Ugandan landscape highlighting the colonialists journeys to “discoveries” (in particular the source of the Nile). These mappings of their discoveries are then layered to reveal different discoveries of the source of the Nile through time, critiquing western mapping of African landscapes.

These maps include:
1.1548 Ptolemy’s African map, Search for the source of the Nile
2. Francis Wilford’s map, About the Nile and the Mountains of the Moon
3. John Speke’s map of East Africa, Journey to the source of the nile
4. East African Map today. Uganda Municipal Council

This leaves us with a question, Do western maps on African countries represent the landscape for what it is? These maps were mainly drawn from a western point of view and there was little to no understanding of the place. (Most colonialists were sent on expeditions and had draw something to present back to the queen - royal geographical society)

2D section cut through the natural history museum with my proposal. (Initial section)
One thing I’ve realised is that after my conceptual collages, I always develop my proposal through long sections whilst working on plans. It gets you to critically think of what you really want to add and take out.
You should aim for your final drawings to match your conceptual collages language
