We are honoured that our piece Sixteen was selected and exhibited in the architecture room of this year's Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, beautifully curated by Peter Barber. In response to the exhibition theme ‘Making is Thinking’, we contributed a section of a large ceramic surface that we produced collectively while living and working in Grymsdyke Farm for one week last year. The work captures our shared interest in earth materials, time expression, and embodied and collaborative architectural design. The original surface measures 2.5mx2.5m and is an assemblage of 256 ceramic tiles, all drawn and glazed with the specialist support of ceramicist Jessie Lee. The project was conceived and supervised by our tutors Yeoryia Manolopoulou and Thomas Parker. Authored by: Ceren Erten, Zhongliang Huang (Abe), Matt King, Rebecca Lim, Desire Lubwama, Polina Morova, Karin Kei Nagano, Vilius Petraitis, Anton Joshua Schwingen, Kaye Song, Negar Taatizadeh, Ella Thorns, Alexander Venditti, Tia-Angelie Vijh, Janet Vutcheva, Qingyuan Rubin Zhou.

Many thanks to Guan Lee, Director of Grymsdyke Farm; Jessie Lee, Ceramicist; and Nigel Tucker, Workshop Manager. @grymsdykefarm @peterbarber12 @royalacademyarts @architecture_ra

Y5: Fabrica, Porto

Fabrica: factory, craftsman’s studio, workshop, fabric.

Fabrica takes the methodologies of both architecture and textile design in parallel to create a space with its own specific programme, fitted to its urban context. It combines the scales of both the body and the city. The project explores the dialogue between design control and loosing control through tailoring and surface dressing, which play as communicative capacities that inform the identity of the body.

At Fabrica, the textile industry becomes a catalyst for social change, a means of bringing together people from different walks of life and creating a space for dialogue and understanding through sharing of skills, stories, and traditions. In particular, with the commissioning of North African immigrants to work in the textile sector due to a proposed lack of labour in the near future by the Portuguese Textile Association (ATP)

The project uses graphical language of garment patterns, symbols and processes from both North African and Portuguese textiles and spaces are transformed into a structural garments. The spaces are designed following different processes like dyeing, loom weaving, seaming and sewing. Fabrica can be read as a synthesis of the architectural fabric of Boavista and the structural grid of the site.

All of the students’ models this term sat together.

A proud moment looking at and celebrating all of our work after yesterday’s pin(/blue tack/masking tape)-up.

And even more excited for what is coming next!

Through an active process of experimenting with plastic and clay to create terms in which sustainable material can take place, the project seeks to explore applications of these materials for an adaptive host space in Central Milton Keynes’ Tree Cathedral. By doing so, the value of the associated ritual will dictate the design of the spaces.

Ritual: A social action that includes predefined sequences of action characterised by rigidity, formality and repetition.

Follow along the Unit 17 end of Term Review on our stories today!

The presentation begins speaking in collaboration about our project ‘Adapt’ x @grymsdykefarm and how we came to perform our conversational piece in the landscape.

Then we will move into our individual work from our final few weeks, taking conclusions from our previous ensemble explorations in the context of ‘In-Between’.

Unit 17 ‘Adapt’ x @grymsdykefarm

Constructing a bell tower from a found piece of timber, the rope was mounted into the sky where it unravelled to splay across the land.

Over the week at @grymsdykefarm each quartet designed instruments to construct spaces and movements with the unravelled rope. Meanwhile collaborating as 16 on the tower framework, designing and making how the rope was held and shared out.

By the end of day 5, the rope was raised as everyone assembled to enact the extended space together. This happened in a reflected room from where the design was first conceived inside, marked into the grass.

Unit 17 ‘Adapt’ x @grymsdykefarm

As the finale of our collaborative project, all 16 students lived and worked together on the farm; designing a drawing on the land with the found materials available.

Converging the projects from 16, to 8, to 4, together we each brought our own interpretation of our design processes. Unthreading and reimagining the spatial and social possibilities of the rope as we rebound it together again.

Adapt - 16 students, 16 initial prompts, 4 weeks.

The project evolved from the individual’s first reaction to a prompt, merging to a duo, then again as a quartet, and finally as a whole: 1, 2, 4, 16.

Building up to a final land drawing as we lived and made together at @grymsdykefarm.

We will be sharing more in the coming week.

This Sunday we will have over 10 guests speak about 10 special architects who they have worked with. We will hear more about the works they were involved in whilst practicing with them as well as how they were influenced to become the young architects they are today. This talk is greatly inspired by @ayeshaerkin #unsungarchitects series
Tune in tomorrow to find out more!

There are many different ways for creating a strong narrative for your architecture project. One very powerful approach is connecting past and present.

Today we would like to present to you how by balancing those two worlds @desirel.arch has created an exceptional architectural piece.

The Salon of Natural History and the Appropriation of East African/Uganda Culture

"The Salon consists of a montage of experiences with key spaces consisting of, Marianne North’s gallery, a Banana Plantation, Terracotta kiln and kitchen, and restaurant/ oral gallery.

My response to Robert Maxwell’s essay ‘Sweet Disorder and the Carefully Careless’ quotes his description “it is possible to see all cultural manifestations as a mechanism whose aim is to ensure a balance between control and inspiration, between order and disorder, in a dynamic situation of constant change.”

The design project therefore critiques the influence/effects of colonialism on the Ugandan/East African landscape and how its culture has been appropriated since the coming of the colonial rule.

The key ideas for ensuing the design proposal have been generated through analysing the layers imposed on the Ugandan/East African landscape, the different representations and views of the East African/ Ugandan natural landscape by the natives both before and after the coming of the colonisers in the nineteenth century, (missionaries, explorers etc) as well as the western view of the East African/Uganda culture.

The project’s response concerns the layering and integration of ideas from the picturesque. In the various ways where East African/Ugandan culture and its meanings of nature have been appropriated by western cultures, the salon’s spaces are designed to reintroduce/reveal the Ugandan/East African natural history through the eyes of its natives an in turn educate museum users through different montages of experiences.’’
