Climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk ended his indefinite hunger strike early Friday after Union ministers JP Nadda and Dr Jitendra Singh met him at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. Assam is battling a devastating humanitarian crisis after relentless rainfall and overflowing rivers submerged large parts of the state, killing more than 50 people during the ongoing monsoon season and leaving over 100 others missing.At least 31 deaths were reported within a single 24-hour period as floodwaters rapidly entered villages across Upper Assam. Nearly eight lakh people across 16 districts have reportedly been affected, with Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat among the worst-hit areas.Entire settlements have disappeared beneath muddy water, forcing families to abandon their homes with little more than the clothes they were wearing. Roads, bridges and embankments have been damaged, while thousands of hectares of farmland have been submerged, destroying crops and threatening the livelihoods of rural families.The crisis reportedly intensified after extremely heavy rainfall and a cloudburst in neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland caused rivers to overflow into Assam. The Brahmaputra and several of its tributaries were flowing above the danger level at multiple locations.More than 6,000 stranded people have been rescued by the Army, NDRF, SDRF, Assam Police, emergency personnel and local authorities. Hundreds of relief camps and distribution centres have been opened, but several villages remain completely cut off, making it difficult to deliver food, drinking water and medicines. Drones are also being used to carry essential supplies to inaccessible areas.Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the scale of destruction as “unprecedented” and announced compensation of ₹4 lakh for the families of those killed. Head Constable Aashiq Hussain Qureshi of the 3rd Battalion, India Reserve Police (IRP) was martyred in a terrorist attack while deployed for Amarnath Yatra security duty at Lal Chowk, Anantnag, Jammu & Kashmir. A lone terrorist opened fire on the police party around 12:30 pm, critically injuring Qureshi. He was rushed to Government Medical College (GMC), Anantnag, where he succumbed to his injuries. Security forces immediately launched a massive cordon-and-search operation to trace the attacker, while additional deployments were made across the area.
