Here, come with me.

If you do this you will notice your phone growing heavier and heavier in your hand, and when you do –

You’re altering perception by directing your attention.

Don’t be fooled by the simplicity of this. The implications are big. (This is like the baby stage of Hypnotic anesthesia.)

Practice taking your trance back from this device.

Experiment in making your phone heavy, making it hot or cool, making it light as a cloud.

Then, if you can do that, think about the implications…

What if you could loosen the tension in your jaw so you could fully relax before sleep each night??

What if, by loosening your jaw the thoughts racing in your mind also start to slow… down…?

What if you could imagine your restless legs, that nervous tic, as pleasantly heavy weights, grounding you down, like roots of an ancient tree anchored to the earth?

What if you remembered the way your body felt swimming in some foreign sea and how the exhilarating feeling took over your whole being?

What if you could invite that sensation into your experience now, far away from that place?

I’m here to help you reclaim your trances, to fully own them, and to use them for the good of all.

This is how metaphors work in Hypnosis. It can feel magical and it kind of is, because we are working with oft-unspoken things in the nonphysical realm that nonetheless transfer energy and information, telling us what to do, how to behave, “stay in line” etc.

The cords we work with in Hypnotic cord cutting is just one example.

I have news! I’m moving.

And the fact that this picture of perfection was shoved in my face by my phone first thing this morning feels significant.

I signed a lease on an apartment with windows overlooking the Hudson River in the historic district of my new tiny adorable town. I’m officially an upstater.

This photo was taken when me & molly had just moved into our Oakland apartment by Lake Merritt: mattress on the floor. Brand-new comforter, without even a duvet cover yet. Perfectly emblematic of a fresh start.

The thought that keeps circling my consciousness is that some part of me had this moment on their calendar. A year ago. Some part of me KNEW I’d be coming up here. Some part of me decided with absolute certainty to abstain from traveling to conferences, and convinced me to be uncomfortable for one full year, living out of a suitcase and not having a bed and a kitchen and a bathroom that was mine. I never would have wound up in this town unless I took that year of weird and stuck with it. Thank the gods I trust my intuition and the nonsensical nudges I get.

There’s a strange feeling I get in this town that I’ve never felt anywhere, ever. In the mornings I work out at the YMCA in town and when I drive back into the downtown historic district I have this feeling that I’m driving “home.”

September stirred ideas in my mind that took me by surprise — I’d found myself wondering all through September what it would be like to have a home without molly, as I considered whether I wanted to actually live up here. Molly came into my life when I got my first apartment, so I never had to live alone-alone. She was always part of making a place feel like home, and I took a lot of joy in making our places homey for her. I started to realize some uncomfortable feelings when considering living truly alone for the first time ever.

Then I felt molly with me on the morning of the equinox in a visceral way and I’ve felt her presence by my side ever since.

Life is wild. Am I really doing this again? The joy & dread & excitement & exhaustion of starting over. Again! A privilege for sure. 🍂✨ taken in Hudson Valley, NY by @desmerized

Reminder (& note to self!):

An open heart can override more limiting factors, circumstances, and beliefs than you even realize.

I’ve become very dedicated to this way of being.

But what does it mean to have an open heart? It’s a metaphor, so there’s no concrete instruction manual.

It’s not a logical way of operating, it’s the antithesis to that. Hope is bound up in it. Trust is too. There may be no good reason to trust in this world; the practice is doing it anyway.

The practice is pushing back against logic, incrementally.

It’s a panoramic way of operating. It’s your higher self living through you.

It’s kind of like an open mind… similar effects, except more energetic.

I’m in my 40s. I didn’t always operate this way. I treated it as experiments and as a practice. I used to be a hypervigilant person. Now my hypervigilance has been transformed into meta-awareness, a magic-feeling power to employ on the daily.

If you can’t figure out how to open your heart, then open your mind. Practice that. Believe in more. Question your beliefs and assumptions and every automated response or reaction.

Then bring it down, into your heart. Add in the hope and trust.

I know someone needed this reminder. ✨ by @desmerized

Trance is natural and happening all the time (like, right now) but who are they benefiting, really?

Trances are liminal shifts in awareness, temporary by design.

These windows of time can keep critical thinking at bay, so that you may become more accepting of what you’re exposed to.

We’re in trance on social media a lot.

Trance exists on a spectrum.

On the dark end of the spectrum, this means that our attention is extracted to the benefit of others. In this extracted trance, when we are exposed to influential, polarizing, or disturbing content, we may be more accepting of it as reality, when in truth it’s a distortion, or one facet of reality magnified.

Trance is natural - and your innate trance capacity is being exploited!

What if… you co-opted this trance, right here right now, and redirected it within? What if you then used that space to shift your own perception?

Hypnosis is the intentional use of trance to create a change in state, to alter perception, or to direct your own fate.

This is an invitation to reclaim your trances as your own, to employ them towards YOUR desired ends, and to enjoy them simply because you can. by @desmerized

Happy to be cringe when the Hudson Valley is healing me.

A couple people who read my emails reached out because I haven’t sent one in a few weeks. As an author in-the-making, it means a lot that you missed my correspondence enough to check in.

I have no pictures or words to share, but this is an example of how I’ve been spending my days. 🍂✨💫 taken in Hudson Valley, New York by @desmerized

Resurrected for the first time since 2023!

🪏🪦 I may have buried the lead.

This carefully-curated spooky season hypnosis mixtape comes with a 13 day free, no-strings trial to my full despensary because it was too hard to pick among the many tracks in my library!

So along with 13 hypnosis tracks, you get 13 days of access to 100s of tracks — including a hypnotic apothecary with techniques to quell acute pain, headaches, and allergies.

Every track is downloadable so you can listen offline for the ultimate undistractible experience.

The best part (to me ♥️) is that every purchase directly supports my writing residency. My residency is entirely self-funded. Rent is due tomorrow and your contribution helps more than you know! You’re supporting the development of new, important work in hypnosis. by @desmerized

I woke up with an epiphany that came in answer to an unasked question.

September: the writing residency in the adorable small town may have unexpectedly turned into a whole new life.

I got a little job at the general store. I’m working on my milk texturing techniques and perfecting my espresso. I made some friends.

I want a “home” again very much. I’ve been living out of a suitcase for a year. It’s been about 14 months since Molly died, and my epiphany was to do with her. I realized that my uneasy feeling is about worrying that any “home” will feel lonely or empty without her. That I may actually be a little scared because I haven’t had a home without her in a really long time. And I haven’t lived truly alone ever, actually, because she came into my life the moment I got my first apartment solo.

So I’ve been waking up in these waves of intense sadness ever since the day of the equinox, feeling like she’s with me. I assumed it was due to the seasons turning, bexause me & molly were sure as hell fall girls.

That’s part of it but this little “home” realization was the thing looming a couple levels deeper. I never had to make a home without her. And now that time is coming, and I’m moving on in another way. So far away from Oakland’s perpetually, impossibly perfect climes, days in gardens with green all around and somehow still always crispy golden leaves to crunch underfoot. Spending hours making Molly herbal concoctions and “dogtails” with roses and cucumbers in her water dish. So far from her operatic serenades and sharing apples on the daily. So far away from green hair and that most-perfect scene I’d melt into when I got in bed each night.

Anyway, Septembers are always a lot, are they not? taken in Coxsackie, New York by @desmerized

How I induce hypnosis with a pendulum:

This is one of my favorite inductions. It mirrors the most ubiquitous trance of our time – the phone trance.

Acknowledging the capacity our phones have to put us into trance is one of the quickest ways to understand how to induce trance on purpose.

With both the pendulum and phone trances, we have a floating limb (muscle catalepsy) and eye fixation, a powerful induction in and of itself (you may recognize it from experiences with “highway hypnosis” or total engrossment in a movie or book).

Pendulum has some added panache, though:

Left-right eye movement engages both hemispheres of the brain, promoting relaxation, nervous system regulation, and opening the doors of perception.

When thinking about the immediacy of the phone’s trance, and how quickly it can take me away from what I intended to do and draw me into something else entirely…

I give that same kind of power to my pendulum.

My pendulum takes me away from all distractions and allows me to focus solely on a goal or outcome within a hypnotic trance.

The more power you give it and the more you practice it, it can become almost like a hypnotic switch you flip. It takes me just a few swings of the pendulum to get good and trancy.

To do it:

just find a place you’d like to sit for a little while, and an outcome that you’d like to focus your energy towards.

Hold the pendulum up high and make it swing nice and big. Keep your eyes fixed on it and whenever your eyes feel ready to close, go ahead and close them and set the pendulum aside.

Then imagine your desired outcome playing out with every sensory detail you can elicit.

Open your eyes when you’re done to end the trance.

I noticed something interesting in my video – my pendulum shifted from a side to side swing to a front/back swing at the exact moment my eyes were ready to close. 🤩 that’s an ideomotor response. Pretty cool!
