On Becoming Dessa Bluu

Dessa Bluu isn’t just my art name; it’s a story that carries the salt of my tears, the fire of my ancestors and the poetry of my becoming.

Through glass, I learned clarity
Through pigment, I embraced change
Through mosaic, I found renewal
Through writing, I claimed my voice

My art isn’t created for myself alone.
It’s for anyone who has ever been told they’re too much, too little or too loud in their truth.

I create for those who carry oceans in their chest, who speak in colour, who remember in fragments and who rise again and again in shimmering self-belief.

“Through it all, it remains a lived story — offered in the hope it meets others in theirs.”. —db

"Si'itia o le Vasa Pasefika" is grounded in the reality of rising sea levels across the Pacific. The kava bowl at the centre holds memory and continuity, reminding us that even through adversity, our Pacific Island customs and traditions remain unshaken. I'm delighted to have this work exhibited at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, "Summer" Exhibition in Wellington's Cathedral of St Paul. -db

I created this painting a few years ago and it's currently displayed in my studio alongside other works featuring indigenous themes I admire. While I can't pinpoint the exact inspiration behind this piece and acknowledge it isn't a masterpiece, it remains a work for which I hold personal fondness. —db
