I created this painting a few years ago and it's currently displayed in my studio alongside other works featuring indigenous themes I admire. While I can't pinpoint the exact inspiration behind this piece and acknowledge it isn't a masterpiece, it remains a work for which I hold personal fondness. —db

‘Trust Small Sparks’

Artist and poet Dessa Bluu on Given Words and the anthology.

‘Given Words found me in the small surprising space between five words and a blank page. That tiny constraint felt like permission, a gentle nudge to slow down, listen to each word’s tone and follow the associations that surfaced. On days when nothing else seemed possible those prompts were enough to open a door: images, memories and lines I hadn’t known I carried stepped forward.

‘The practice taught me to trust small sparks. Instead of waiting for perfect conditions I learned to treat limitation as invitation — to play, risk and allow intuition to lead. Some poems arrived fully formed; others were quiet excavations that revealed themselves only after several returns. Either way the work felt communal: a shared experiment in attention that made writing feel less solitary and more like conversation.

‘An anthology of Given Words would be a map of Aotearoa’s many voices — ordinary and extraordinary, tender and fierce. It would show how accessibility and constraint can coexist producing work that is both immediate and lasting.

‘Above all the organisers’ warmth made the project feel like home and the fact that words were offered by people from all walks of life made it real and present — something that made me want to come back and be part of it again.’

The incredible artist @dessabluu asked the Coromind team to donate the $100 New World Whitianga voucher she won as a featured artist to a good cause. And over Easter, a local community member who found one of our $50 New World Gift Card Easter eggs kindly did the same.

We donated these vouchers to the Whitianga Social Services :)

As Coromind continues to grow, so do the heartwarming connections with the amazing people of our region.

These small acts of generosity remind us how powerful community spirit can be.
