Not long ago, I laid my beloved mother to eternal rest.

Mom 🕊️

Though 96 years is a full and storied life, the news of your passing has shattered me into a thousand small fragments.
You were a formidable and indomitable woman, one of Ethiopia’s first professionally trained nurses, a Korean War veteran who served with the Kagnew Battalion, and one of the very few from our continent ever honored with the Florence Nightingale Medal, nursing’s highest global distinction. Beyond your medical service, you carried Ethiopian soldiers through their darkest hours abroad, translating, comforting, reassuring. A branch of Enat Bank in Addis Ababa now bears your name, so your legacy lives on in the country you served. Yet to me, you were simply Mom: a woman of unwavering dignity, boundless empathy, and a tenderness that knew no bounds. Your wit and your zest for life illuminated everything around you.

Losing a mother is an emptiness unlike any other, a void I find difficult to put into words. And selfishly, I sit in this pain, hoping it never overshadows the fullness of the life you lived, nor the legacy you leave behind. Watching you laid six feet under broke something in me. It felt cruel, unbearably cruel to leave someone so precious to me in a graveyard. I am heartbroken beyond words, and I don’t know if that feeling will ever fully leave me.

I will forever cherish our cheek-to-cheek conversations beside the warm, crackling fireplace, and the way you blushed at even the smallest gesture of affection. No number of Atlantic crossings, three, four times a year to see you as you got older was ever enough. Every farewell carved its own quiet ache.

With my head down and and eyes full of tears, Rest in eternal peace, my queen, my friend. You will never be forgotten.
