My Brooklyn room with a view 25 years ago.

I knew then that the skyline of New York had changed forever, but what I didn't know is that everything changed that day.

At the time I was going to school and DJing at night to make money. Just hours before I was staring at the towers after a night of playing music at Bob's. I was eating my lentil soup at four in the morning, staring at the towers like I did most nights.
Like most things in life, I didn't know I was doing it for the last time.
NYC was and is one of the best cities in the world and I was proud to call it home for 18 years.

My mother’s older sister, Berkinesh Kebede, passed away this month in Ethiopia at 96. If my mother was fire, she was steely cool. The calm she carried everywhere is what I will hold on to forever. But the greatest gift she gave me was her son @destabydesta . Many know about the epic relationship he had with my mother but very few knew that his mother was my spirit animal. She was one of one. My ace par excellence forever.

May she rest in perfect peace. 🕊️

My first Art Quilt done and headed to a show in South Africa as part of a group of participating quilts sent from Kenya by @thekenyaquiltguild.

We had to use one fabric in common and create something that represents Kenya. I went with an abstract quilt inspired by a lovely day in Kilifi with my dear friends @destabydesta @soulfulsafaris @randoshen @v.cavallo @supergou @e.n.e.a19624 and the lovely @_padha.

A special thank you to @simba432 and Amber for their teachings, guidance and most importantly their patience!

We all have different rituals. One of mine involves really beautiful shoes. I tend to mark the major milestones in my life with a pair of Manolo’s. The great moments (finishing my manuscript), important transitions (a break-up that was hard but necessary), a big gig (leading journaling workshops at Hotel du Cap). All punctuated with a pair of Manolo’s.

Why? Because: joy. And also, there’s something to be said about building your confidence from the ground up.

So it was incredibly poignant to have Manolo Blahnik host a party in honor of the publication of my book, The Big Unlock.

The evening was graciously co-hosted by my chic friends @anncaruso and @meganstrachan. Editorial legend @punchhutton was kind enough to say a few words. The coupes were full, there were hugs and books and a lot of new faces, as well as some of my blood family and chosen family. And just to make things a little more surreal, trays of macarons imprinted with my book title floated by. It was dreamy, almost otherworldly and very, very meaningful.

And why do journaling and Manolo’s go together? Well, I’ve spent the last decade trying to shift the cultural perception of what it means to journal, to dispel fussy implications and elevate it through both science and beauty. Celebrating The Big Unlock here in this jewel-box of a location felt really right.

Huge thank you to Manolo Blahnik for making this evening one I will never forget. And of course, it was all punctuated by a new pair of gorgeous heels in which I will be sure to make more memories.
