POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
No one is safe when ICE is present – whether on the streets or in one of the agency’s more than 200 abuse-ridden detention facilities.

It’s time to End the ICE Age. More soon.

ICE getting rid of seven detention warehouses is a direct result of community organizing! There is immense power in neighbors joining neighbors to advocate for the dignity of all people, to reject dehumanization, and to call for taxpayer dollars to be invested in projects and programs that support communities as a whole. People are not commodities to be shipped, discarded, and profited off of in detention warehouses or any detention facility — full stop. Local communities are making it clear from coast to coast – they don’t want detention warehouses or detention centers of any kind.

There are at least four detention warehouses that still pose the imminent risk of opening, including in Surprise, AZ, Socorro, TX, San Antonio, TX, and Hagerstown, MD. While the future of ICE’s detention warehouse model is unclear, ICE’s overall intention to have the ability to detain 100,000 people remains unchanged. Instead of relying on a carceral economy, people want elected leaders to champion projects that bring investment to support all families, including housing, education, and healthcare.

Support local organizing happening in the sites that still pose a risk of opening:

We are committed and resolute in our vision. We know where the power truly lies: with us – DWN members and people across the country uniting to protect one another no matter where someone came from or how they arrived in the United States. For Detention Watch Network, we believe every person has the right to move and live freely, in community and with their family, without fear of being separated from their loved ones or displaced from their home.

Instead of fighting over a piece of the pie, we can make the whole pie bigger—and our immigrant friends and neighbors, current and future, are part of that solution.

We are ready, no matter who is in the White House. #abolishdetention

“They were victims, not abusers. That’s what they told police officers, attorneys, visitors and anyone else who would listen. It didn’t matter. The women were all taken to a sprawling immigration detention center in the woods of west Michigan and handed thin jumpsuits — red, to mark them as a high security risk.”

Read this essential piece from @propublica on the struggles of women who should never have been imprisoned at the North Lake Processing Center and their work to support each other, which underscores not only the need to shut down North Lake for good, but also the urgent need for concrete sanctuary policies that @cosechagr and @grrapidresponse have continued to demand in Kent County. 🚨🚨 BREAKING: Congresswoman @repdeliaramirez introduces new legislation that would dismantle the Department of Homeland Security, abolish ICE, and create a new Department of Community Safety.

ICE and DHS have subjected communities to violent raids, family separation, detention, deportation, and murder. We cannot keep pouring resources into a system that inflicts harm on our communities.

It’s time to dismantle DHS and ICE and reimagine what public safety looks like. #MeltICE 🧊 by @detentionwatch

‼️Advocates sent a letter to ICE condemning retaliation against hunger strikers‼️ Over 500 people detained inside Folkston are estimated to be on hunger strike, and ICE and GEO Group are retaliating against them! At least 30 people have been placed in solitary confinement, people’s phone and tablet access inside has been cut off, outside advocates have had messaging access terminated, and ICE has transferred one of the lead hunger strike organizers, Idris Makhmudov of Russia, to the Alexandria detention center, suggesting his deportation may be imminent. ICE RETALIATION IS A VIOLATION OF THE FIRST AMENDMENT. We demand that ICE release people from solitary confinement immediately! SHUT DOWN FOLKSTON AND ALL DETENTION CENTERS! ABOLISH ICE! by @detentionwatch

Southeast Advocacy Manager Tania Wolf has an op-ed in @thelensnola on the planned ICE facility in Alexandria, Louisiana. In the piece, she addresses the Commissioners of the Board of the England Airpark Economic and Industrial Development District and calls on them to find the courage to terminate the contract for this new detention center that will hold women and children. (The full op-ed is at thelensnola.org.)
