Día de los Muertos teaches us that a person dies twice: once when they leave this world, and again when no one says their name. We refuse the second death. Today and always, we say the names of those we have lost to immigration enforcement. This Día de los Muertos, join us to honor and remember the lives taken by ICE and Border Patrol, and to demand an end to the violence. We’ll gather at the North Lake Processing Center on Sunday, 11/1 at 4pm and grieve publicly for the people who have died in ICE custody and been killed by ICE and Border Patrol agents, drawing on the Día de los Muertos tradition of honoring loved ones. Last December, Nenko Gantchev died at North Lake because of the GEO Group’s medical neglect, one of over 50 people who have died in ICE custody since the start of Trump’s second term. On September 20th of this year, ICE killed Mario David Coronado Juárez when they pursued his vehicle in Grand Rapids. Just days after that, they kidnapped more members of Mario’s family. No one is safe in ICE’s presence. This event is part of End the ICE Age, a national weekend of action taking place in cities across the country from October 31st through November 2nd. Join organizations from across Michigan to honor lives lost, stand in solidarity with those held inside, and to demand an end to immigrant detention.
