Controversial opinion alert: I don’t think overspending has to be justified by habits just because they’re good for you 🫢

In a world where we can use money as a tool to be better let’s use it to ACTUALLY be better. Hold off on buying that Stanley cup until you’ve hit your water goal for 2 weeks.

Hold off on buying a capsule wardrobe until you’ve fixed your relationship with what you see in the mirror.

Using money to solve our problems never works until we try solving the problem without spending first.

What do you think šŸ‘€

1. I started small. My entire financial journey started with a decision to pay off my debt.
I started with Ā£200. Then eventually cleared my debt. Then thought hmm let’s learn about savings now. Then investments. Then business. It snowballed!!

2. I built an emergency fund at the SAME time as clearing my debt (i.e. it took me slightly longer because I focussed on two things).
That’s because I didn’t want to have to get into more debt if something came up. This enabled me to permanently stay out of consumer debt.

3. I built my self esteem up. I didn’t quite realised that I was literally wired into the debt & overspending cycle I was in at the time.
I built this up through committing to physical fitness goals and taking micro-risks in my life (not planning out every single thing letting things go wrong, letting people down) to build up that sense of self trust.

Change feels like it’ll take ages but it’s actually so quick once you start. What’s one small thing you’ve been putting off doing that you KNOW is good for you? by @devamsha

Nothing I love more than paying £20 a month to worry less about something that costs more than £20 to worry about

THE LIST šŸ”–

1. Anthropic/Claude - the ability to sort my emails and generate invoices alone is enough. But my goal is to learn how to outsource more creator ops to cowork bc I know I’m sleeping on this

2. Manychat Pro - I’ve seen the girlies hating on having to comment a word but this is the easiest way to share a link. Whether that’s to articles or products, doing this manually is very time consuming. I manually messaged 500+ back in 2024 when I launched a mini course.

3. Wispr Flow - I talk a lot and I’ve found this to be the best software that catches my own way of speaking. It’s much better than native dictation (for now)

4. Canva Pro - I’ve created templates for a lot of content on @financialhotgirl and it’s made making content so easy. I used to manually make carousels in Affinity Design back in 2021/2022 and now it’s so easy to get my ideas into a beautiful piece of content

5. CleanMyMac - I don’t even know how long I’ve had this subscription. I renew my licence every year and this is the one subscription I couldn’t be without. Storage warnings are sorted so quickly and I have a clear picture of what’s on my MacBook

Anything I’m missing?

Have you heard of negative visualisation?

It’s when you feel more motivated toward a goal if you think about what happens if you DON’T achieve it.

I think we should do the same thing but with financial literacy!!! by @devamsha

blame the algo. ITS ALWAYS THE ALGO

your feed is not a financial benchmark!!!

run don’t walk to @financialhotgirl for a guide on how to place yourself in your Earn, Keep or Grow season

I feel like we’ve normalised comparing ourselves to the 1%??? I mean yeah I might continue doing that but remind yourself that it’s not overnight

unfortunately the scary conversation will usually have the highest ROI šŸ’€

at this point I just need to time travel and send myself all my own content from the future

1ļøāƒ£ The budget I used to get out of debt (60/10/10/10/10) was great and good and amazing but that’s ALL it was good for.

It was a ramp to get me out of a bad financial life and into a new one where the budget didn’t actually come in handy anymore. I couldn’t just use it forever, it had to change with my lifestyle & goals

2ļøāƒ£ Tracking my transactions BUT ONLY for 3-6 months. Just so I could understand why I spent what I spent I.e. understanding my emotional habits, because working on those is actually what cured the overspending

3ļøāƒ£ Matching my money habits to my financial season. IMO your 20s should be for learning how to earn and keep your money, so that you can really be in your grow season afterwards.

Applying seasonal habits is hard because you have to force yourself to do a few RIGHT things instead of just trying to do all of the ā€˜financially healthy’ things. As an overachieving ambitious girlie that’s hard

4ļøāƒ£ Paying myself first always, even if it meant I had to spend way less than normal. (As a self employed girl this now includes paying the taxman before myself >:() but this habit CHANGED how I think about money.

Like it actually made a lightbulb go off in my brain about how our brains just get used to different amounts in the bank - I spent how much I had left instead of trying to force myself to save what I had left

5ļøāƒ£ Reading more fiction & embracing my offline hobbies did more for my money than doing anything financial.

Sounds unhinged as a financial habit but truly my overspending was 90% a lack of emotional regulation. Dopamine hits to cope with a life I wasn’t truly happy with.

6ļøāƒ£ Nobody cares about you. Now I don’t mean this in a depressing way but moreso that a lot of us spend a lot of hard CASH trying to fit in/be liked/be included. It’s something I call the self-hate tax.

We spend it by buying trendy outfits or spending time with people we don’t even like. These people are never going to return the money you spend to be liked by them so start liking yourself enough to know what’s worth by @devamsha

know your financial season and you’ll make way more progress than just trying to ā€œget good with moneyā€.

applying a seasonal mindset to your finances lets you focus, take that focus to 100%, and actually make a difference instead of running around in circles doing 1515724 things at once.

what season are you in: earn, keep or grow?
