Controversial opinion alert: I don’t think overspending has to be justified by habits just because they’re good for you đŸ«ą

In a world where we can use money as a tool to be better let’s use it to ACTUALLY be better. Hold off on buying that Stanley cup until you’ve hit your water goal for 2 weeks.

Hold off on buying a capsule wardrobe until you’ve fixed your relationship with what you see in the mirror.

Using money to solve our problems never works until we try solving the problem without spending first.

What do you think 👀

1. I started small. My entire financial journey started with a decision to pay off my debt.
I started with £200. Then eventually cleared my debt. Then thought hmm let’s learn about savings now. Then investments. Then business. It snowballed!!

2. I built an emergency fund at the SAME time as clearing my debt (i.e. it took me slightly longer because I focussed on two things).
That’s because I didn’t want to have to get into more debt if something came up. This enabled me to permanently stay out of consumer debt.

3. I built my self esteem up. I didn’t quite realised that I was literally wired into the debt & overspending cycle I was in at the time.
I built this up through committing to physical fitness goals and taking micro-risks in my life (not planning out every single thing letting things go wrong, letting people down) to build up that sense of self trust.

Change feels like it’ll take ages but it’s actually so quick once you start. What’s one small thing you’ve been putting off doing that you KNOW is good for you?

Have you heard of negative visualisation?

It’s when you feel more motivated toward a goal if you think about what happens if you DON’T achieve it.

I think we should do the same thing but with financial literacy!!!

at this point I just need to time travel and send myself all my own content from the future

1ïžâƒŁ The budget I used to get out of debt (60/10/10/10/10) was great and good and amazing but that’s ALL it was good for.

It was a ramp to get me out of a bad financial life and into a new one where the budget didn’t actually come in handy anymore. I couldn’t just use it forever, it had to change with my lifestyle & goals

2ïžâƒŁ Tracking my transactions BUT ONLY for 3-6 months. Just so I could understand why I spent what I spent I.e. understanding my emotional habits, because working on those is actually what cured the overspending

3ïžâƒŁ Matching my money habits to my financial season. IMO your 20s should be for learning how to earn and keep your money, so that you can really be in your grow season afterwards.

Applying seasonal habits is hard because you have to force yourself to do a few RIGHT things instead of just trying to do all of the ‘financially healthy’ things. As an overachieving ambitious girlie that’s hard

4ïžâƒŁ Paying myself first always, even if it meant I had to spend way less than normal. (As a self employed girl this now includes paying the taxman before myself >:() but this habit CHANGED how I think about money.

Like it actually made a lightbulb go off in my brain about how our brains just get used to different amounts in the bank - I spent how much I had left instead of trying to force myself to save what I had left

5ïžâƒŁ Reading more fiction & embracing my offline hobbies did more for my money than doing anything financial.

Sounds unhinged as a financial habit but truly my overspending was 90% a lack of emotional regulation. Dopamine hits to cope with a life I wasn’t truly happy with.

6ïžâƒŁ Nobody cares about you. Now I don’t mean this in a depressing way but moreso that a lot of us spend a lot of hard CASH trying to fit in/be liked/be included. It’s something I call the self-hate tax.

We spend it by buying trendy outfits or spending time with people we don’t even like. These people are never going to return the money you spend to be liked by them so start liking yourself enough to know what’s worth

know your financial season and you’ll make way more progress than just trying to “get good with money”.

applying a seasonal mindset to your finances lets you focus, take that focus to 100%, and actually make a difference instead of running around in circles doing 1515724 things at once.

what season are you in: earn, keep or grow?

EL SQUEEZIO. Didn’t expect to get triggered by yoghurt but here we are. Things I didn’t expect after (only, in this context!) 7 months of travel - the cost of our food shop going up by 20-40%.

Now obviously my personal food shop costs aren’t unaffordable, but I am constantly aware of what life used to feel like when I just had nothing. And when I see things like this I think of that. Sure, I’ve hustled my way to ‘more money’ and better earning potential but why should that be a requirement just to get by?

How to build longevity as a creator: think deeply about the actual work and impact you want to create, then protect HOW you do it.

I actually think I could add to this video, if you have a specific way of thinking about something (whether that’s because of your experience, credibility, qualification or combo of these things) you could create any combo of IP! Digital products, frameworks, guides, entire philosophies.

That’s how @financialhotgirl was born and fun fact, I only protected it because another creator tried to steal it! I didn’t even realise I was building assets I could protect before đŸ«Ș

Thoughts on the latest @thecut article. I do not relate to this article whatsoever but I’m also in the complete opposite demographic đŸ«Ș

Does this raise a question about financial entitlement though? Has the squeeze of being a millennial with crazy financial & economical uncertainties validated the entitlement?

In the culture I grew up in, financial entitlement doesn’t exist. There are very blurred lines between ‘your’ money and ‘my’ money. Help is help.

What do you think???

If you want to be a part of this change:

1) build your unique skill set - a few of mine are social media, digital marketing strategy, storytelling

2) create a personal brand (pro tip you already have one you’re just not being intentional about it) - building one online gives you more visibility and exposure but offline is a great start

3) surround yourself with doers & builders - unique opportunities are not easy to find! be around the people creating them or talking about them

I am seriously so excited to see not only my creator career evolve but the whole industry evolve!!! There is so much change coming and it’s so exciting
