Hey all, my first collaboration with @avant.arte, Le Mat, launches on November 6.
Based on an original work from my Tarot series of paintings, the print edition explores identity and mysticism through decoration and colour – making use of rhinestones, gold foil embossing and glitter inks.

What a surprise and an honor! RetCanon Collective (@devanshimoyama, @terry__boyd, and I) are top 5 finalists for @artprize! The people have voted and they want more anti-colonial space roleplay! If you’re around Grand Rapids, the exhibition at @resonantgallery (Western Michigan University Grand Rapids campus) has a closing reception on Friday from 5-7pm! Come join me and my fam as we say goodbye to RetCanon Collective’s first exhibition of “The Future of the Hive” - an actual play / game performance, costumes, video media design, and newly designed book! Major thanks to @ericsouther for supporting this installation version and inviting us to finally exhibit this performance for video we made over a year ago. Thanks to @joshuakosker for platform design!!

Presented by RetCanon Collective (Devan Shimoyama, Angela Washko, and Terry Boyd), The Future of the Hive is a live theatrical performance and tabletop roleplaying game that takes place in an alternative galaxy where a colonizing force is beginning to expand its reaches. Seven player-performers take on the roles of members of unusual species and improvisationally play and perform - exploring space ecologies, multi-species commons, intersectional solidarity and collaboration, conflicting stakes on land, and collaborative worldbuilding through the
wild facade of a space travel adventure game.

Thanks @arsenalcontemporary for having me! Was in Montreal for the month of July and made two paintings now on view at @blouindivision through August 29th with works by Oli Epp, Rae Klein, Justin Liam O’Brien and Harrison Pearce. If you’re wondering, he’s an Eladrin elf, lives in Waterdeep, wild magic sorcerer, recently multi-classed as a fighter after a traumatic loss of a dear friend who was a college of swords bard. I’ll share install images later since they’re all horizontal. Bless 🫰🏾✨

Devan Shimoyama is a multimedia artist based in Pittsburgh and a recipient of a 2025 Advancing Black Arts in Pittsburgh grant for an exciting, upcoming tabletop RPG game that he’s making under the working title “Pleasure and Fear.”

“Worldbuilding and fantasy are an important part of my artistic practice, and this is a way to make art that can be more participatory and generative,” Shimoyama says about the project.

The game, which was inspired by Octavia Butler’s “Book of Martha” and Nnedi Okorafor’s “Who Fears Death, Pleasure and Fear” will feature magic of deific proportion and real historical references for players to engage with.

“Players will problem solve in a variety of situations including having to enact a heist, exposing a militant political leader’s dark secrets, and assisting in an abolitionist movement,” he added. “My game reinterprets these ideas to create an allegory for self-discovery, queer and POC identity and self-love.”

Devan Shimoyama (b. 1989) (he/him) @devanshimoyama

As Pittsburgh-based artist Devan Shimoyama explains, “I make paintings and sculptures that explore magic, transformation and identity. I celebrate Black queer identity using both traditional and unconventional painting materials, with emphasis on vibrant colors, textiles, glitter and rhinestones.” (text from the artist) His use of saturated colors and his balance of beauty and macabre have allowed the artist to create a unique style that acts as a voice for many marginalized communities. taken in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania by @devanshimoyama

“[The body] gave me a container, a boundary to play within…”

Devan Shimoyama’s work considers beauty, glamour, and their illusions alongside ugliness, treating each as a generative force in composition and meaning.

Beginning with figure drawing and expanding through an increasingly multimedia approach, Shimoyama brings together fabrics, beads, and other mixed media to explore how materials coalesce, communicate, and evoke bodily presence. Over time, these investigations became more deliberate, using materials with greater purpose and meaning.

Shaped by the visual language of, and experiences within chapels, churches, nightclubs, and the Queer community, Shimoyama connects adornment, light, and atmosphere as transformative forces capable of elevating both space and body into something luminous, sensual, and transcendent.

@devanshimoyama on view in Let There Be Light, now through September @cannonballarts
