When I started @devanthechiro at the end of Term 2, I had no idea it would become so much more than a simple Instagram account. I just knew that starting Term 3, I wanted a digital diary, a place to document the real, raw journey of becoming a chiropractor. No family lineage to fall back on, no blueprint, just an independent girl with a dream to stand tall in a field historically dominated by men.

What I didn’t expect was for this page to become a digital yearbook not only for me, but for my classmates, my friends, my people. As I posted updates, they started asking me to capture their moments too. Somewhere along the way, my diary became our collective story.

Then the school reached out and asked me to do for them what I had already been doing all along… and suddenly I was given a bigger platform, a bigger community, and the chance to leave an impact on future chiros who were standing exactly where I once stood.

And now… chiro school is over… yet my story has just started to unfold. I feel fulfilled but also surprisingly sad. No more all-nighters. No more shared suffering. No more joking around with my clinic team.

But what will stay with me are the friendships, the learning, the drive — because people say you make lifelong friends in college, but I’ve learned you make the truest friends when you surround yourself with people whose dreams reach just as far as yours.

This was the wildest roller coaster I’ve ever been on. I can’t say I’d ride it again… but I can say it prepared me for the next, even bigger one — the one I like to call “the rest of my life.”

Starting a business from the ground up is hard work, but Sherry and Stefan — who offered up their facilities at @totstoppreschool and have watched my journey to becoming a doctor unfold for 15 years makes it so much easier. This was supposed to be a fun “back in the swing of things” vlog. Instead it became a lesson in what it’s like to be a sick woman in our healthcare system.

After calling off two days for a kidney stone and kidney infection, I spent this Monday getting ready, treating my patients, and slowly realizing I was getting worse as the day went on — to the point I started turning yellow. Turns out the antibiotic I’d been prescribed was the wrong choice for the bacteria I had, so it was doing basically nothing. Day 5 of a 10-day script and I felt exactly as awful as day 1.

So I went back to urgent care. The male PA-C who saw me said he “doubted” I was passing a kidney stone — because if I were, I’d supposedly be writhing on the floor screaming. I politely let him know I have an extensive history with kidney stones, that I didn’t need him to confirm what I already know, and that his own colleague had diagnosed me with both a stone AND a kidney infection five days earlier. His response? Since I wasn’t screaming right then, he’d downgrade it to “just a bad bladder infection.”

This is not a dig at male providers. It’s a dig at being dismissed.
Not fitting the textbook picture of “sick” is exactly why it took 10 years to diagnose my chronic kidney stones at 15, and 25 years to uncover the connective tissue disorder behind a long list of issues I was told I’d “made up in my head.” Being a woman with an invisible illness is a full-time job of advocating for yourself.

So consider this your sign:

If you’re a provider — listen to your patients. Their lived experience outranks your assumptions about what pain “should” look like.

If you’re a patient — you’re allowed to know your own body, and you’re allowed to push back.

Our bodies don’t read the textbook. I did eventually leave with the correct antibiotic, and two days in I already feel like a different person — but I’ll keep advocating for myself every time. 🤍 by @devanthechiro

Thank you. Genuinely. The way you all showed up on my last post reminded me exactly why I said it out loud in the first place.

One of my professors left a comment that reframed this whole thing for me — that when high achievers finally hit the goal they’ve been chasing, there’s often a crash that follows. You run on that drive for so long, and then you get there and your brain just… stalls. It’s not that something’s wrong with me. It’s the quiet that comes after the climb.

That gave words to something I couldn’t explain. Post-grad is hard in a way no one really warns you about. Half the time I feel like an adult baby figuring out how to exist without a next assignment telling me where to go. But I’m also still so excited for where all of this is heading.

The in-between is part of the journey too. Learning to actually sit in it. 🤍
