Flax has been grown and harvested in Ireland as far back as the Neolithic period. Irish linen was once a booming industry, peaking in the late 1700s, thanks in part to a British ban on Irish wool exports. The industry started to collapse in the 1900s with globalization and the rise of synthetic fibres. By the 1960s, commercial flax growing had ceased to exist in Ireland. Bringing it back would offer huge ecological and environmental benefits. @mallonlinen in Co.Tyrone are spearheading the grassroots revival of flax farming in Ireland and I recently had the pleasure of photographing their annual flax harvest and meitheal (an old Irish word for cooperative labour) organised in collaboration with @fibreshed_ireland. It brought together a group of passionate people each doing their bit to revive this beautiful, regenerative, carbon capturing, low impact, crop. by @devapardue

Sean Kilkelly demonstrating the traditional craft of blade shearing at the Athenry Meitheal. Hand blade shearing is a deep rooted agricultural practice in Ireland that requires a high level of skill and wrist strength. It’s an endangered craft as electric shearing has taken over in commercial farming. Manual shearing protects the animal by leaving a layer of wool fat that guards against harsh weather. It’s also a less stressful experience for the sheep than the loud, mechanical, rapid, experience of electric shearing. by @devapardue
“The Galway” is Ireland’s only native sheep breed. It’s wool was traditionally used in Irish Aran jumpers but in the 80’s the breed almost went extinct when importing wool became cheaper, synthetic fibres grew in popularity, and commercial sheep farming started to favour fast-growing meat breeds. The price of Galway wool dropped so low that it cost more to shear the sheep than the wool was actually worth—a problem that persists today. Though the Galway breed has been saved from extinction by a small group of farmers, there are still only around 2,000 Galway’s on an island of millions of sheep. They hold protected rare breed status. Today, next to no wool used in Irish knitwear is actually sourced, scoured, spun, and knitted entirely in Ireland. Just last year, almost €100 million worth of woollen products sold as “Made in Ireland” in Ireland were made using imported wool. The annual Athenry Meitheal (an old Irish word for a communal activity where neighbours come together to assist one another with labour-intensive work) exists to renew routes to market for native Irish wool. It’s organised on a voluntary basis by the Galway Wool Co-op (@thegalwaywoolco_op) and is now in its sixth year. At the Meithael, trailer loads of Galway wool are delivered to the livestock mart in Athenry. The wool is weighed and inspected by the Galway Sheep Breeders Association, each farmer is issued with a receipt, and the wool is sent to it’s buyers. Buying and using wool from the Galway sheep helps preserve the cultural integrity of traditional Irish knitwear, reduce the carbon emissions associated with imported wool, and support the farmers conserving Ireland’s only native sheep breed. Some photos from last weekend’s solstice celebrations at The Hill of Uisneacht, and The Hill of Tara where I watched the sun rise and set consecutively for the first time in my life. I dont know why I waited so long. It felt really special to be part of these Irish ceremonial and gathering traditions that have been happening for almost 5,000 years. by @devapardue
As a current student I was delighted at the opportunity to photograph The Drawing School in Dublin. Founded in 2008 by Samuel Horler, the school offers academic courses in drawing and painting with instruction rooted in traditional drawing methods such as the Cours de Dessin by Charles Bargue, a 19th century drawing manual studied by art giants like Picasso and Van Gogh. The School also houses a vast library and collection of drawings, plaster casts, and prints for students to work from as they deepen their practice. I’m so glad I found this little gem off Merrion Square. Take a class - you wont regret it! by @devapardue
