Milan has a way of turning conversations into something much larger than the moment itself.

As I revisit these reflections, I'm reminded of the generosity with which ideas were shared across disciplines, geographies, and generations. What stood out wasn't a singular trend or direction, but a collective willingness to question, challenge, and reimagine the role of design today.

From discussions around materiality and making to technology, sustainability, research, and cultural identity, each exchange offered a different lens through which to view the evolving design landscape. Together, these conversations formed a rich tapestry of perspectives that continue to resonate far beyond the fairgrounds, galleries, and installations of Milan.

Serene. Comforting. Like the house had always been there.
Villa Shai was never meant to announce itself. It was meant to hold you - quietly, completely, in the way that only Goa can.
The brief was simple on the surface: a family holiday home oriented around nature, calm, and light.
But the real brief, the one underneath, was about belonging. About a family wanting a place that felt like theirs the moment they walked in.
Every material was chosen for how it ages.
Every space planned around how it breathes.
Nothing added that didn’t need to be there.

This is what we design for at @theworksinteriors, not the photograph. The feeling.

What does it mean to curate the world around you?

At Design Democracy last week, @devikas_atelier joined an insightful conversation on luxury tastemakers and digital tastemakers, exploring how the people shaping our visual and cultural landscapes influence what we notice, desire and ultimately define as taste.

From luxury to the digital everyday, the conversation looked at the evolving role of the tastemaker and the many ways curation happens today.

MILAN EDIT — RECAP

We went to Milan to talk about design.
What we found were people deeply connected to why they design.

Across conversations, what stayed with us wasn’t only the work, but the conviction behind it — years of curiosity, experimentation, questioning, making and sometimes unmaking.

Different practices. Different cultures. Different ways of seeing the world. Yet each conversation revealed something remarkably similar: the most compelling work comes from a very personal place.

Meeting these incredible minds reminded us that behind every object, building or idea is a person who has spent years paying attention.

Perhaps that is what we brought back from Milan…a deeper appreciation not just for what people create, but for what drives them to keep creating.

MILAN EDIT — RECAP

After all the conversations, one thought kept returning:
The best designers don’t only look at design. They look at life.

At people. Memory. Culture. Cities. Nature. Craft. Technology. The everyday. The things we inherit and the things we choose to question.

We heard about restraint and responsibility. About staying curious. About working with the hand while embracing what technology can make possible. About legacy without nostalgia, and progress without losing what makes us human.

Milan gave us extraordinary work to see.
But it was the thinking behind that work that stayed with us.

And perhaps that is what The Third Space has always wanted to explore…....the space beyond the finished work, where ideas, experiences and ways of seeing begin to shape what eventually gets made.

This little corner at Ridge View was really about creating a place to sit by the window…morning tea, a book, or honestly, just doing nothing for a while.

Looking back at some of my older work, I realise it’s often these small corners that stay with me. Not necessarily the grand gestures, but the ones that make you want to sit down and linger.

And this sunny yellow chair still makes me happy.

When I first experienced Yayoi Kusama’s LOVE IS CALLING at the ICA Boston in 2022, I was fascinated by the changing colours, the endless reflections and her voice reciting a love poem as one moved through the space.

I came away wanting to know more about the woman behind it.

That deep dive changed how I saw the work. Kusama has spoken about experiencing hallucinations from a young age…seeing fields of dots, patterns and auras that seemed to engulf her surroundings. What could have remained something frightening and debilitating became the visual language she has returned to throughout her life.

The dots. The repetition. The mirrors multiplying everything into infinity.

There was something incredibly powerful in that for me…the idea that what challenges us can sometimes become the very thing that defines our voice.

Perhaps that is what creativity does at its most powerful.
It doesn’t always erase our vulnerabilities. Sometimes, it transforms them.

My little tribute to an iconic artist and to a woman who turned what she saw into a universe the rest of us could step inside. taken in The Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston by @devikas_atelier

What you saw were the conversations.
What you didn’t see were the hours before them.

Notes scribbled at cafés, in between spaces...
Research over coffee. Questions rewritten between meetings. Walking through Milano thinking about what I wanted to ask next and sometimes throwing the prepared questions away because the conversation took us somewhere far more interesting.

For me, ‘The Milan Edit’ was never about simply getting some of the biggest names in design in front of a camera.
I wanted to understand how they think. What they question.
What still excites them after decades of making, designing and building.

And that meant doing the homework.

A little BTS from Milan…the less glamorous, slightly obsessive, very caffeinated part of making this series. :)

Our final episode with @giuliocappellini_ marks the end of our Milan Edit 2026 and it feels like the perfect conversation to close with.

Giulio is someone who has shaped contemporary design for decades, and yet what struck me most was his curiosity. He is still exploring, still looking at new products, still discovering and championing young talent, still asking what’s next?

There’s something incredibly inspiring about staying that curious, no matter how much you’ve already achieved.

This conversation was very special to me and definitely a must-watch for anyone who loves design.
