MILAN EDIT — RECAP

We went to Milan to talk about design.
What we found were people deeply connected to why they design.

Across conversations, what stayed with us wasn’t only the work, but the conviction behind it — years of curiosity, experimentation, questioning, making and sometimes unmaking.

Different practices. Different cultures. Different ways of seeing the world. Yet each conversation revealed something remarkably similar: the most compelling work comes from a very personal place.

Meeting these incredible minds reminded us that behind every object, building or idea is a person who has spent years paying attention.

Perhaps that is what we brought back from Milan…a deeper appreciation not just for what people create, but for what drives them to keep creating.

MILAN EDIT — RECAP

After all the conversations, one thought kept returning:
The best designers don’t only look at design. They look at life.

At people. Memory. Culture. Cities. Nature. Craft. Technology. The everyday. The things we inherit and the things we choose to question.

We heard about restraint and responsibility. About staying curious. About working with the hand while embracing what technology can make possible. About legacy without nostalgia, and progress without losing what makes us human.

Milan gave us extraordinary work to see.
But it was the thinking behind that work that stayed with us.

And perhaps that is what The Third Space has always wanted to explore…....the space beyond the finished work, where ideas, experiences and ways of seeing begin to shape what eventually gets made.

As @sabiennale comes to a close today, we keep thinking about what stayed with us.

It wasn’t only where we encountered the art, but who was making it and where it was coming from.

Across different venues, contemporary practices sat alongside works created by local communities…...drawing from traditional knowledge, familiar materials, memory and sometimes simply what came instinctively to heart and mind.

There was an honesty to that which was difficult to miss.

No need to fit within a particular vocabulary of art. No separation between tradition and the contemporary. Just people responding to their place, their lives and what they knew.

Perhaps that is what made these venues feel so different.

The landscape wasn’t a backdrop.
The local community wasn’t an audience.
Tradition wasn’t something being referenced from a distance.

They were all part of the making.
For @thirdspace_podcast, sā raised an interesting thought:

When we take art outside the conventional gallery, perhaps we’re not only changing where art is experienced. We also begin to question who gets to make it, what we choose to call art, and whose stories find a place within that conversation.

Sometimes the most affecting work doesn’t need to announce itself as art.

It just needs to feel true.
