What a good afternoon talking about Texas rivers.

Yesterday I had the honor of joining @josh_winkler and @shanebonnot on stage following a Houston screening of Deep in the Heart II: Texas Rivers for a conversation about water, wildlife, conservation… and the people and communities connected to all of them (which is literally all of us!)

It has been a true joy working with Josh and the @finandfurfilms team. The enthusiasm, thoughtfulness and genuine love they bring to telling stories about Texas and its wild places comes through in this film. I’m grateful to have these sorts of opportunities to be involved.

Shane and the folks at @cca_texas continue to do tremendous work for our coast, too - including reminding us that healthy bays and estuaries begin well upstream, with the rivers and watersheds that nourish them.

I was especially proud to represent the @devils_river_conservancy and a river and landscape that have shaped so much of my own conservation work. And inspired by a theater full of people who stayed afterward to ask questions and think more deeply about the future of Texas water.

And I’m really happy my family was there for this one. The work matters tremendously to me, but getting to look into an audience and see the people who love and support you?

That’s everything.

Go see Deep in the Heart II: Texas Rivers. And then go love a river.

Last Friday, the Public Utility Commission of Texas approved the Howard-Solstice 765-kV transmission line and selected a modified version of Route 4.

The modification does not change any of the original Route 4 linkages west of Uvalde.

The approved route does avoid a direct crossing of the Devils River and protects the heart of the conservation corridor we fought to shield. But protecting the river does not mean we believe the process that produced this decision was adequate or fair, and DRC’s responsibility to Devils River Basin landowners and our partners did not end with Friday’s vote.

To read DRC's full response to this decision, including what comes next in our work, and see the Route 4 map through the Devils River Basin, click the link in bio or visit devilsriverconservancy.org/conservation-currents/2026/hs-transmission-decision. by @devils_river_conservancy

The Devils River Conservancy is now managing a project to control Arundo along San Felipe Creek in Del Rio, and we invite you to learn more about it this Friday!

Arundo donax, or giant reed, is a non-native species of aquatic plant that can become invasive along Texas waterways, including San Felipe Creek. It consumes more water than native vegetation, does less to prevent erosion of creek banks, and doesn’t support our wildlife nearly as well as a diverse native habitat does.

Join DRC this Friday at Casa de la Cultura in Del Rio to hear from the project coordinator and ask questions.

🗓️ Friday, September 4
🕥 Doors open at 5:30PM, presentation starts at 6
📍 302 Cantu St, Del Rio, TX 78840

No RSVP required. Light refreshments will be provided.

Last week, DRC’s Executive Director, Romey Swanson, participated as a speaker in @preservethehillcountry’s Capitol Rally in opposition of the 765kV transmission lines.

The goal? To urge Texas leaders to call on the PUC to deny all pending 765kV project applications so the Texas Legislature has time to revise the application process for greater fairness and transparency for all affected parties, including landowners.

We may find out about the outcome of our collective efforts as soon as tomorrow, when the Public Utility Commission of Texas will meet to review the Howard-Solstice transmission line project’s CCN application and possibly make a decision to:
1️⃣ Either approve or deny the application for the Howard-Solstice Transmission Line
2️⃣ If they approve it, what the final route will be

We’ll keep you posted on any decision-making by the PUC.

In the meantime, to learn more about DRC’s perspective on this topic, listen to Romey’s interview on a recent episode of Texas Public Radio’s Texas Matters with David Martin Davies.

Join us on the South Steps of the Texas Capitol tomorrow morning (8/19)!

📣 @preservethehillcountry is hosting a rally from 8-11AM to oppose the 765kV transmission lines, including the proposed Howard-Solstice project that could cut through the Devils River Basin and irreparably harm one of our last remaining wild places in Texas.

DRC’s Executive Director, Romey Swanson, will be among the lineup of speakers at the rally, along with many other land and water stewards standing up for all Texans! Opening remarks begin at 8:30AM.

Come add your voice to the crowd and help us encourage the House Committee on State Affairs to call on the PUC to deny existing CCN applications for these 765kV transmission lines, just as the Senate Committee on Business and Commerce did last month.

Pressing pause on these existing applications provides more time to explore alternative, less harmful, and more efficient options for improving Texas’ electric grid reliability. It would also give the Texas Legislature the opportunity to create a fairer and more transparent process for all future projects, allowing landowners and community leaders adequate notice and due process to address any project that could impact natural resources and private property rights.

See you out there! 😎 taken in Austin, Texas by @devils_river_conservancy

August 16, 2026: New World screwworm was detected in a sheep in Val Verde County, Texas.

Terrell and Brewster counties also currently have active livestock cases. Please stay vigilant in checking your livestock and pets and report any observations of maggots in open wounds.

Additional Updates:
➡️ Earlier in August, the FDA issued an emergency use authorization for the topical application of CLiK Extra wound spray to prevent NWS infestations in sheep, goats, cattle, swine, and camelids, as well as captive and captured wildlife species including cervids like deer and elk, bison, bighorn sheep, and pronghorn. This wound spray is available over the counter and should be applied at the time of wound appearance or creation (e.g. dehorning, ear tagging, castration, shearing, etc.). This spray does not treat NWS; if a wound is already infested, contact your veterinarian to determine treatment.

Please note CliK Extra wound spray does not kill NWS larvae but instead acts as a growth regulator that disrupts their development, preventing them from causing tissue damage to the host animal.

➡️ The FDA issued a separate emergency use authorization for Simparica TRIO to treat NWS in dogs and puppies. Unlike the aforementioned wound spray for livestock, this medication is not preventative; rather it can be prescribed by a veterinarian to treat an active infestation. Simparica TRIO has been approved by the FDA to treat heartworm, flea, and tick infestations in dogs since 2020.

🔗 To ensure you are prepared for NWS, click the link in our bio or visit devilsriverconservancy.org/2026-screwworm for information and resources on this issue, including who to contact to report an observation.
