What a good afternoon talking about Texas rivers. Yesterday I had the honor of joining @josh_winkler and @shanebonnot on stage following a Houston screening of Deep in the Heart II: Texas Rivers for a conversation about water, wildlife, conservation… and the people and communities connected to all of them (which is literally all of us!) It has been a true joy working with Josh and the @finandfurfilms team. The enthusiasm, thoughtfulness and genuine love they bring to telling stories about Texas and its wild places comes through in this film. I’m grateful to have these sorts of opportunities to be involved. Shane and the folks at @cca_texas continue to do tremendous work for our coast, too - including reminding us that healthy bays and estuaries begin well upstream, with the rivers and watersheds that nourish them. I was especially proud to represent the @devils_river_conservancy and a river and landscape that have shaped so much of my own conservation work. And inspired by a theater full of people who stayed afterward to ask questions and think more deeply about the future of Texas water. And I’m really happy my family was there for this one. The work matters tremendously to me, but getting to look into an audience and see the people who love and support you? That’s everything. Go see Deep in the Heart II: Texas Rivers. And then go love a river. #DeepInTheHeartII #TexasRivers #TexasWildlife #TexasConservation #FinAndFur

This episode is spent with Tom and Merily Keller on the Hodge Keller Juno Ranch in Val Verde County, a 21,500-acre place their family has held together since 1912. They show the barn where Merily packed wool as a child, the Divide cave with handprints and paintings thousands of years old, and the one-room schoolhouse that once had 115 students. It is the kind of country people come to for dark skies and long views, and it is also working land that still has to pay for itself. The Howard-Solstice line is the 765-kV project running more than 300 miles from south of San Antonio out to the Permian. Its structures towering over 160 feet tall. One of the routes on the table would cut across the Kellers ranch, take a two-hundred-foot strip, put towers on the highest ground, and leave roads and concrete that do not fade in this desert. The Kellers would be paid once for the easement. The towers would be there forever, and so would the break in the hunting country, the wildlife, and the views that keep people coming back. Their story is not an exception. It is a clear look at what this project means for landowners throughout this project all the way from San Antonio to Fort Stockton. The PUC still has not decided on the Howard-Solstice project. The decision is on their agenda this Friday 9/11 at their open meeting starting at 9:30am ask the Commission to hold off on a final route and wait until the Legislature reconvenes, or until the Governor calls a special session, instead of pushing the decision through. Please share this video, contact your state representative and senator, and send the same request to the Public Utility Commission of Texas under Docket 59336. NEW EPISODE! Romey Swanson (@romeyswanson.wildlife) is the Executive Director of the @devils_river_conservancy, and he wears plenty of other hats too—wildlife biologist, naturalist, writer, photographer, and a leader in just about every corner of Texas conservation. The Devils River is widely considered the most pristine stream in Texas, and maybe the entire Southwest—remote, spring-fed, and held together by private landowners. The county it runs through leads all 254 counties in Texas in privately conserved acres, and none of it was required by regulation. If you’ve ever wondered how conservation gets done in a place with almost no public land, Romey and his community have built a model worth paying attention to. Romey grew up in rural West Virginia as part of what he calls the last generation of feral children—turned loose outside with instructions to be home before dark, the creek behind the house his best friend. His family moved to Texas when he was in junior high, and like most teenagers, he traded it all for sports and a social life. He was a first-generation college student headed toward sports medicine when he walked past a flyer at Texas State for a Wildlife Society meeting—free pizza and live animals. He went for the pizza, met a faculty advisor, and changed his major that week. I’ve known Romey for six or seven years, and we cover a lot of ground—his early days filling deer feeders and checking nest boxes, why waiting tables taught him as much about this work as his degrees, and whether leadership can be taught. We get into the threats facing the Devils River—data centers, transmission lines, and energy projects that can undo decades of voluntary conservation—and his work with the mountain lion stakeholder group in Texas, which has obvious parallels to the wolf situation here in Colorado. There’s also a stretch on his passion projects, including his owl research in far West Texas, and why he uses social media to push out something positive instead of conflict. We wrap up with book recommendations and his encouragement to all of us to pay attention. Enjoy! Link in profile. Photos courtesy of Romey.

The Devil's River earns its name! We had an incredible adventure over 15 miles, beaten, bruised, burned, and stoked for the ride. Sometimes you need to do hard shit to remind yourself what you are capable of.
