I am so excited and proud to have completed my MArch thesis project. The past year working on this project has been an exploration of innovative design solutions but also a discovery of a personal design ethos.

Remedy | A Fossil Fuel Memorial | Spring 2023 MArch Thesis taught by Andrew Bernheimer

As global energy systems shift reliance from conventional fossil fuels towards renewable sources, the sites that housed the production, maintenance and storage of these fossil fuels become increasingly vacant and unused. Their pollution and inability to meet requirements for their renewable counterparts leave them vulnerable to complete redevelopment, while the cost and shear undertaking of remediating for development encourages harmful methods that only cap or move the problem offsite. This dilemma poses an important critique about the current methods of “remediation” and architecture, the core of my thesis.

The site of what used to be an oil storage facility for Bayside Oil Depot is now an inaugural example of this conversation and serves as an opportunity to shape the narrative and approach to complex remediation in the years to come. The abandoned Bayside Oil Depot at Bushwick Inlet Park is a contested site with an interesting history and questionable future. While it was demolished in 2019, the remnants of the oil storage tanks are still seen in physical imprints and effects in the soil and water quality. This thesis proposes an alternative and regenerative site intervention where architecture acts as a temporal tool to heal and engage. Through a combination of multiple processes, including excavation, on-site chemical remediation and phytoremediation, Remedy hopes to define a new precedent of on-site soil remediation for these fossil fuel memorials. taken in Parsons School of Design by @devincostellodesign

@marinaberenguer and I were lucky enough to get to attend the AIA 2022 conference this past week to receive our award from the Committee on the Environment for our project, Farmscape: A Modern Farm for the Anthropocene. We are so proud and grateful to get to celebrate our own work and other students who are answering complex issues with innovative and sustainable designs. taken in Chicago, Illinois by @devincostellodesign

Borough Park Public Library | Design Studio 4 Spring 2022 led by @dmleven and Brett Schnieder

A mass timber midrise building within the Brooklyn Public Library system that aims to contribute to the conversation around mass timber construction as a method of decarbonized architecture. Another semester down with (surprise, surprise) @marinaberenguer as my partner in crime. @parsons.arch taken in Parsons School of Design by @devincostellodesign

So excited and proud to be awarded the @acsanational 2022 COTE Competition Award with @marinaberenguer. This project was a labor of love and we are so excited to spark further conversation around how historic preservation and adaptive reuse should look in a changing climate. Next stop: @aianational convention in Chicago this summer. taken in Parsons School of Design by @devincostellodesign

MArch Studio III, Natural Systems Final

Once a municipal airport, Floyd Bennett Field was the pinnacle of aviation technology. Our project hopes to turn the focus from aviation to agriculture, from flight to ground, and from consumption to regeneration. We have developed a modern farm for the Anthropocene, Farmscape. Our project aims to shift linear design systems to regenerative and cyclical processes through adaptive reuse and a unique approach to historical preservation.
