POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Congratulations to Marina Berenguer, @marinaberenguer, and Devin Costello, @devincostellodesign , for being selected as one of the top ten projects selected for the 2022 COTE Student Competition! Huge accomplishment—this competition had over 600 participants. Link in bio.

Project Title: Farmscape

Studio: Studio III – Natural Systems

Faculty: Joel Towers @joeledwintowers & Kayeon Lee

Project Description:

The human tendencies to extract, displace, or demolish have proven to be maladaptive for

people and the planet. We must move towards regenerative and cyclical processes, focusing on

returning, growing, and working with our environments. This change in paradigm highlights the

shift into the Anthropocene. We believe that architecture’s role in the Anthropocene is realized

through the values and methods of adaptive reuse, changing programs with thoughtful and

innovative changes to form. We believe Farmscape can serve as an example for urban food

production in the Anthropocene.

Competition Information:

The American Institute of Architects Committee on the Environment (AIA COTE), in partnership with the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA), have selected the recipients of the 2022 AIA COTE Top Ten for Students Competition. The competition recognizes ten exceptional studio projects that demonstrate designs moving towards carbon-neutral operation through creative and innovative integration of design strategies such as daylighting, passive heating and cooling, materials, water, energy generation, and sustainable systems. The program challenged students to submit projects that use a thoroughly integrated approach to architecture, natural systems, and technology to provide architectural solutions that protect and enhance the environment.

Spring 2022 Design Studio 4 - Comprehensive Studio

Led by David Leven @dmleven + Brett Schneider

“As climate change requires us to reimagine how we occupy the planet, our buildings will continue to require new innovation in how we design. Our Brooklyn Public Branch Library proposal in Borough Park aims to serve as an example for how mass timber can be seen as a great option for our future architecture. This library is a result of an aggregation study, a precedent study of Beinecke Library, and mass timber technologies from the Wood Innovation Center. Our library blends “L” shape massing that is held together by the backbone of the archives. The archive’s structure is made possible by CLT panels that act as “fins” and carry down into the branch library on the main floor. The form inspired by the L creates an internal courtyard for more private outdoor programming. The “L” also creates a large cantilever that is made possible with innovative mass timber CLT panels and showcases just how advanced these new methods of construction and design are becoming. The other programming is made up of a cafe, classrooms, community space, an auditorium, conference rooms and offices. The goal of this library is to provide a unique and safe space to learn, create community and serve as an example for other public and civic spaces.”

Q: Who are you, where are you from, and what did you do before coming to Parsons?

A: I grew up in Southern California and went to the University of Colorado Boulder for my undergraduate degree in Environmental Design. I graduated in 2020 and started at Parsons the following semester. I moved to New York alone during the pandemic, even though classes were online and have loved every minute.

Q: What does community mean to you? What’s the most exciting thing about being a part of the Parsons community?

A: I think community means something different to everyone after the past couple years. I think community is one of the most important values human beings share and it is definitely even more important for students. Community helps students advance ideas and feel supported trying new and innovative things. The Parsons community created online and in person is what make me most excited about going to school every day.

Q: What makes living in New York City meaningful and unique to you? In what ways is New York City a source of inspiration for you?

A: New York City is such a great place to live as a young aspiring designer because you are completely surrounded by inspiration and different viewpoints. New York City constantly challenges you to become a better version of yourself while accepting you as you are. Times in New York City when I feel most inspired is whenever I'm walking around the city after 6pm because so many people are out and about. I also am inspired by warm summer days in Central Park, the leaves in the fall, the endless art exhibits just a train ride away, and the amazing views. I feel like New York only pushes me further.

Final Review Design Studio 3- Natural Systems
Led By Joel Towers

This studio posits design as an active condition of being in the world and an essential practice at the intersection of social and environmental justice. We will ask: Is there a place for cautious optimism, peaceful cooperation, and a rigorous, evidence-based embrace of the design and construction of resilient, socio-natural urban ecosystems? Can we design for living with natural systems rather than attempting to thwart them? How will this help us to remake home and community in a just and sustainable fashion?
