EDINBURGH ELOPEMENT

Elope to Edinburgh but make it editorial.

If you need me this week, I’ll be chained to a spreadsheet somewhere, getting prepped for our Brighton conference with Photography Farm. I always very much look forward to these couple of days. Getting in a room with my peers, listening to the talks from some photographers at the top of their game, and filling up my inspiration cup once again.

I might even get the time to get my camera out, like I did at our last conference in Edinburgh where the incredible Camila Urreaa kindly let me tag along to one of her day two sessions.

LEWES ENGAGEMENT

Lewes in Sussex is fast becoming my favourite location, it just has so many gorgeous backdrops. There is almost one around every corner. We went to this spot for the castle but also stopped at this incredible piece of Georgian architectural symmetry. The door on the right is not real but was perhaps put there for balance. The other fake thing about this place is the facade - it is tiled to look like bricks which means that underneath will be a house made from wood.

But everything about Joshua and Eleanor love for each other is real and they didn’t need too much of an excuse to cosy up under Joshua’s jacket in the rain.

NYMANS GARDENS WEDDING

How beautiful is this Nymans Gardens wedding? Anna and Hans hosted both their ceremony and reception at this wonderful National Trust venue in Sussex. Their vibe was intimate, relaxed and modern.

When Anna and Hans spoke to me about what they wanted in their wedding photos they said “Having some photos that we can look back at when we are 80 and wrinkly, and think ‘phwoar! weren’t you gorgeous, love”.

This made me laugh so much and doesn’t it just sum up what great wedding photos are all about? Their day was gloriously laid back, focused on friends and family, good music and good times.

PRESTON COURT WEDDING

This might be Kent’s most unusual wedding venue. In the 12th century, it was home to the wealthiest woman in England, who had a medieval castle there, but before that it was a monastery. The Barn where weddings are held was built in the 17th century and it now houses two fully operational, century-old vintage mechanical dance hall organs as part of an eclectic collection of fairground art and machinery. There aren’t many wedding venues around with a working vintage carousel. It really is quite a magical place and it was the perfect backdrop for Holly and Simon’s beautiful wedding.

A background outside just feels creative and interesting. I think it’s the juxtaposition of something stark up against nature.

WEDDING GROUP PHOTOS ON 35MM FILM

Last weekend was my 23rd wedding anniversary, which of course got me in a sentimental mood. If there’s a tiny snippet of advice that I can pass on to anyone planning a wedding, it is this...

The photos that mean the least to you on the day will mean the most to you in the years to come.

And it’s group photos.

Group photos at weddings - nobody wakes up on a wedding day excited about that part - not the couple, not the guests, and don’t tell anyone, not your photographer either.

They are a PITA in the middle of all the wedding-day fun and frivolity, and suddenly people have to stand in line like it’s a high school class photo.

Quite often, I have a conversation with a couple that goes a little something like this “we are not that bothered about group photos” and I get it. Maybe you’ve been to a wedding and they seemed to take an age, or you’ve been a bridesmaid/groomsman multiple times already and feel like you’ve paid your dues.

But there’s something magical that happens to these images over time. The pictures stay the same but the people in them change.

Your wedding group photos are a record of the most important people to you at that point in time. Trust me, these are the photographs that you will linger over the most when you pull out your wedding album decades later.

So my philosophy is: always do groups. They don’t have to take a long time, they don’t have to be endless line-ups, they can even be fun! You can only regret not doing them.

As your photographer, it tells me who the important people are, it means that even if someone important gets a little lost in the crowd later or goes home early, I know we have a nice picture banked.

WEDDING PORTRAITS ON THE TUBE

Can we have a photo on the tube please? Sure, with how many people? 86 and we are only going one stop 🤔

OK, so we were never going to get all 86 people in one photo but we had a lot of fun trying, much to the bemusement of our fellow travellers.

Joanne & Katie had their drinks reception on the steps outside Islington Town Hall. One guest popped along to a DIY store for decorating tables to serve Prosecco from. Then the wedding transport was courtesy of the London Underground.

They love to party, so the budget they saved went to one heck of a bar bill at the reception.

Thanks to Laura at @onemoment.uk for the BTS of me trying to stay upright, figure out flash settings, focus and not mess this up in the three minutes between stations 🫠

And did I mention that all the while, Mardi Gras music was blasting from a portable speaker? Yes, this was a super fun one.
