THRIVE BRIGHTON 2026 | DAY TWO 🌱

And that’s another Thrive finished. My feet hurt, my brain is full and I’m already thinking about the next one.

Yesterday was about listening and learning. Today was about putting some of that into practice.

We had 18 shoots taking place across Brighton, led by our six keynote speakers, alongside 10 talks about the business of being a wedding photographer.

One of the things I really want people to get from our shoots is an understanding of how other photographers think. It’s lovely to come away with photographs you’re proud of, but I’m much more interested in whether you’ve learned something you’ll use at your next wedding.

Did you try something you wouldn’t normally do? Did watching someone else work make you question how you approach things? Have you got an idea you can’t wait to try?

That’s what I hope people take home.

And of course, there’s the other part of Thrive that I love. Seeing photographers who might otherwise spend most of their working lives on their own, sharing ideas and helping each other. I’ve already heard about people making plans to meet up again, which makes me very happy.

It’s a huge amount of work to bring all of this together, and I am very proud of what we’ve achieved.

Thank you to everyone who came, everyone who taught, and the team who worked so hard behind the scenes.

Now I think we could all do with a sit down.

THRIVE BRIGHTON 2026 | DAY ONE 🌱

Well, that was a LOT of photographers in one room. And what a lovely bunch you are.

After months of planning, it’s always a bit surreal when Thrive actually happens. Suddenly all these people we’ve been chatting to online are here in real life, catching up with old friends, making new ones and having the sort of conversations you don’t often get to have when you’re working on your own.

We’ve had six brilliant photographers sharing their brains with us today, plenty of laughs and hopefully a few things that’ll make you look at your next wedding a little differently.

But my favourite bit? Seeing everyone together. Photographers sharing ideas, asking questions, making connections and generally reminding us what a great community this can be.

Thank you SO much to everyone who came along today. And to our speakers for being so generous with what they know.

Right. Who’s ready to get their cameras out tomorrow?

A PHOTOGRAPHER'S GUIDE TO BRIGHTON | SAVE THIS

I've lived in Brighton for years, and one of my favourite things about this city is that you can head out for a quick wander and somehow end up three hours later with a roll of film, a new camera you didn't need and a very good lunch.

With Thrive Brighton happening next week, I thought I'd put together a little guide for everyone coming to visit.

These are some of my favourite places for food, drinks, film supplies and taking pictures. There are a few tourist spots, obviously, but also some places you might not find unless someone who lives here tells you about them.

And if you're coming to Thrive, I really recommend making a bit of time to explore. Brighton is a brilliant city to wander around with a camera, especially once you get away from the busiest streets.

Save this for your visit, and Brighton locals, what have I missed?

IS THERE DEEP-ROOTED MISOGYNY IN THE WEDDING INDUSTRY? | DEAR DEVLIN PODCAST

This might be the most difficult Dear Devlin I've tackled so far. I rewrote the original blog post several times because I wanted to make sure I was giving the subject the consideration it deserved.
And I knew exactly who I wanted to talk it through with.

@esmewhitesidephotography joins me again this week to discuss a letter from a photographer who's questioning whether misogyny is still deeply embedded in our industry.
We talk about the way women are treated online, why some female photographers feel they have to work harder to be taken seriously, the difference between criticism and outright sexism, and some of the experiences we've both had over the years.

We don't agree on absolutely everything, either, which I think makes for a much more interesting conversation.

It's a complicated subject, and one that goes well beyond a few unpleasant Instagram comments. We also get into safety, recognition, the responsibility we have towards younger photographers entering the industry and the importance of looking out for each other.

I don't think we solved anything in an hour, but I'm very glad we're having the conversation.
Have you experienced or witnessed misogyny in the wedding photography industry?

There’s a very particular kind of tired that comes with October when you’re a wedding photographer.

You still love your couples, you still love taking pictures, but you’ve also spent the last six months being sociable every weekend, carrying heavy equipment, making approximately 400 decisions a day and spending your weekdays staring at Lightroom.

And now even the thought of another group photo makes you want to lie down in a darkened room.

I think we can love this job enormously and still be very ready for a break from it.
Which is partly why I love getting photographers together at Thrive. By October, we could all do with remembering what made us excited about photography in the first place, preferably in a room full of people who understand exactly how we’re feeling.

HOW DO I COPE WITH THE WINTER INCOME GAP? | DEAR DEVLIN PODCAST

If your diary suddenly goes quiet after October, it's very easy to assume you've done something wrong.

In this week's Dear Devlin, we tackle one of the least talked about parts of running a wedding photography business: what happens when the weddings stop, but the bills don't.

Joining me is James Watson from @birchesandpine. Between us, we've both lived through quieter winters, and James has built a business that doesn't rely on one type of photography or one season of the year.

We talk about:
• why an empty winter diary isn't necessarily a failing business
• how your marketing could be creating seasonal gaps without you realising
• building income from branding, food, property and commercial work
• using Meta ads to target the weddings you're currently missing
• and why cash flow deserves just as much attention as bookings.

If you've found yourself staring at your calendar and wondering how you're going to make it through the winter, this conversation is for you.

Listen wherever you get your podcasts, or at the substack link in bio,

‘WHEN THE RAIN CAME DOWN, WE CAME IN! ☔️’

Chris and Lauren took their places on the window seat to exchange their personalised secret vows. And just as they began, their gorgeous pooch Layla climbed up and snuggled right between them. Almost as if she knew she was about to be part of something very special. 🐾✨

In the home they’ve made together, the three of them shared a moment I’ll never forget.
Keep it simple. Love matters. Connection matters. And sometimes, the dog knows exactly where she needs to be. ❤️

The dress…
It carries the joy, the tears, the dust from the ground as you walk and dance. It carries the laughter, the embraces that leave a little trace of everyone you love. The hands that reach for you - the touches, the kisses, the flowers, the wind. And somehow, all of it becomes part of the dress.

Every crease holds a moment. Every mark tells a story. Every thread has witnessed something that can never happen quite the same way again.
