🚦It is happening again ~ but different. This Wednesday 7/22, I’ll be presenting on myths of transformation in Ovid’s Metamorphoses and Twin Peaks @philosophical_research_society . Girls turning into trees, into owls, hot red cars turning into red rooms. 7/22 is Laura Palmer’s (earthly) birthday, so this presentation is now really dedicated to her in all her shine and shadow.

It has been a wild gift to curate/host and now join the Places Wonderful and Strange series. This little town is an infinite world 🌬️♾️🌲

Some pics in this carousel from my most amazing birthday trip last year, when @heidilynnheidilynn took us to all the places 💚

More info in bio link. Zoom livestream + record too for faraway friends. Chocolate bunnies and cherry pie will be available. Bring a flower for Laura! ❤️‍🔥 by @devondeimler

Completing our amazing line-up of David Lynch / Twin Peaks lectures this month, we are celebrating Laura Palmer's birthday on Wednesday, July 22nd!

Laura has meant many things to many people. The Log Lady says Laura is the one leading to the many. Laura describes herself as the "two". And, in the terror and transcendence of her splitness, we see Laura branch into forms natural and supernatural, cosmic and material, demonic and, to many viewers who “feel like they know her,” angelic.

To honor Laura in all of her complexity, we’ll harken back to her mythic ancestors in Ovid’s Metamorphoses: Persephone (Proserpina), homecoming queen of the underworld, and the girls who become trees, birds, and snake-haired stone-gazers to escape bodily violation. We then turn to the modern mythos of Twin Peaks, in which sufferings and joys transfigure into bizarre objects like ceiling fans, traffic lights, creamed corn, drawer pulls, and pale horses, demonstrating how aesthetic correspondences act as psychic portals within the series, and in cherished aspects of David Lynch’s dreamy creative process.

Come for the illuminating talk, stay for the chocolate bunnies and cherry pie!

Wednesday July 22! Come celebrate the birthday of Laura Palmer, dreamer of Twin Peaks, through a presentation on Laura’s story as a myth of metamorphosis! In-person and live-streaming event!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LAURA PALMER! SCREAMS, DREAMS, & MYTHS OF METAMORPHOSIS IN TWIN PEAKS with Devon Deimler, PhD

Laura Palmer, percolate muse of Twin Peaks’ mysteries, was born on this day, July 22, 1972. Laura has meant many things to many people. The Log Lady says Laura is the one leading to the many. Laura describes herself as the two. And, in the terror and transcendence of her splitness, we see Laura branch into forms natural and supernatural, cosmic and material, demonic and, to many viewers who “feel like they know her,” angelic.

Myth is known for its hybrid creatures and uncanny transformations between gods and animals, humans and objects, angels and monsters, underlings and kings. These strange fascinations are not only wonders of the imagination but look-alive images of emotional truth. Metamorphic myths portray the necessity of alteration during moments of crisis—when survival is a matter of changing form.

Above (and below) all, we’ll look at the transformative faces and fates of Laura, from her plastic arrival to her nuclear creation myth in The Return: Part 8.

NEXT TUESDAY, JANUARY 20TH — JUST ANNOUNCED!: PART 8 actors Joy Nash (Señorita Dido), George Griffith (Ray Monroe), and Robert Broski (The Woodsman) will be joining us for an introductory panel as we celebrate DAVID LYNCH’S BIRTHDAY with GOTTA LIGHT?:TWIN PEAKS: THE RETURN — PART 8 (and THE ALCHEMY OF DARKNESS)!

As part of 7th House, The Philosophical Research Society, and Zebulon’s monthlong series NIGHT BLOOMING JASMINE: A CELEBRATION OF DAVID LYNCH, 7th House honors Lynch’s birthday with a truly PRS-style offering: a special big-screen viewing of one of his greatest late-career masterpieces, TWIN PEAKS: THE RETURN — PART 8, followed by a salon-style esoteric/philosophical panel discussion! 🔥🚬

Led by a wonderful group of brilliant thinkers from the realms of mythology (Devon Deimler, PhD), the occult (William Kiesel), time & consciousness (LD Deutsch), and art & cinema (Guadalupe Arellanes Castro), the discussion will delve into the esoteric and philosophical currents running through the episode, the wider Twin Peaks mythology, and Lynch’s singular body of work. The conversation will be opened up to the entire audience.

TWIN PEAKS: THE RETURN — PART 8:

If THE RETURN delighted in subverting expectations of a 25-year-awaited sequel, its now-legendary eighth episode detonated all preconceptions about the boundaries of television itself. Simply put: no one had ever seen anything like it before on television. An absolute masterpiece, ranked among Lynch’s greatest works, Part 8 transcends the series’ already impressionistic narrative while offering a chilling primordial origin story of the cosmic evil haunting the Twin Peaks saga. Standing firmly on its own, this largely dialogueless journey is a masterful melding of surrealist metaphysics, atomic dread, and 1950s monster-movie archetypes, featuring the iconic Fireman, the introduction of one of Lynch’s most unforgettable boogeymen, and an ear-shredding musical interlude by “The” Nine Inch Nails.

Join us at The Philosophical Research Society to celebrate David Lynch’s birthday with this one-of-a-kind event! Info & tickets available via the Linktree in @7th___house’s bio and at prs.org! 🎂🎟️ taken in The Philosophical Research Society by @devondeimler

Wednesday October 29! Join us for BODY HORROR: MIND, BODY, & DISEASE IN CINEMA — a lecture by Quatoyiah Murry!

PLUS we’re offering a ticket sale! Get 50% off your purchase with code BROOD50!

Better yet, 🎟️ WIN TICKETS 🎟️ for you and a plus one to this incredible lecture by commenting below: What makes your flesh crawl?! 😬 *We will choose winners at random and message if you’ve won!

About the lecture:
Traumatic stress has the ability to wreak havoc on the body, resulting in physical symptoms like rashes, lumps, hives, and bumps. In this presentation, three films will be examined for their ability to showcase “trauma horror,” a sub-genre in which the concept of trauma acts as the central cause and effect for the horror taking place in the story. David Cronenberg’s The Brood (1979), M. Night Shyamalan’s Split (2016), and Adam Robitel’s The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014) center on protagonists enduring terrifying physical changes and alterations to their bodies as a result of traumatic stress brought on by childhood abuse and disease.

Come ready to feel your skin crawl and prepare to start reassigning those odd bumps on your body after learning how trauma can manifest itself physically in the body and within the space around it.

🎃 Next up! This Wednesday, 10/22 with dear friend and mytho maestro Dr. John Bucher ~ BEHIND THE MASK: Ancient Ritual, Myth, & Modern Horror
😱 Live and live-screamed! $12 tix → prs.org/events or link in bio

Masks have always held a paradoxical power: they conceal while also revealing. In ancient rituals and mythological traditions, masks were not mere disguises—they were portals. From the ceremonial masks of African and Oceanic cultures that allowed participants to embody spirits, ancestors, or deities, to the Greek tragic masks that amplified human emotion and divine fate, masks have long been used to blur the boundary between the human and the supernatural. In Mesoamerican traditions, masks were worn in rites of death and rebirth, transforming individuals into gods, animals, or cosmic forces, dissolving the ordinary self into something otherworldly.

In this talk, John Bucher explores how the ritual functions of masks—invoking fear, transformation, and awe—find new life in the world of horror cinema. Just as ritual masks once mediated encounters with the sacred or the terrifying unknown, horror masks from films such as Halloween’s Michael Myers, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’s Leatherface, or Scream’s Ghostface similarly strip away individuality to embody archetypal fear. These masks transform killers into symbols—forces beyond humanity, embodiments of death, chaos, or repressed cultural anxieties.

By placing ritual and mythology side by side with modern horror films, this talk will ask: Why are masks such enduring tools for confronting what frightens us? How do they function as thresholds between order and chaos, human and inhuman, life and death? And what do these parallels reveal about our deepest fears—ancient and modern alike?
