THIS SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 19! A 7th House at PRS original! As part of THROUGH MIRRORS, WEBS, & WOODS: A Month of Folk & Fairy Tales at PRS, 7th House and Cinemyth present THE FAIRY TALES OF JIM HENSON: An Illuminated Conversation with Author Andrea Wright, a special evening exploring Jim Henson’s fascination with fairy tales & folklore—and their influence throughout his career—featuring a very rare screening of Henson’s unaired first series pilot, TALES OF THE TINKERDEE (1962)! 🏰
In a specially recorded conversation illustrated with rare archival materials, Wright—author of the new book THE FAIRY TALES OF JIM HENSON: KEEPING THE BEST PLACE BY THE FIRE—traces this overlooked thread across Henson’s career: from his unrealized 1958 HANSEL AND GRETEL and the early Tinkerdee pilots through the “Muppetization” of CINDERELLA, THE FROG PRINCE, & THE BREMEN TOWN MUSICIANS; strange fairy-tale commercials; fairy-tale riffs in SESAME STREET and THE MUPPET SHOW; the fantasy worlds of THE DARK CRYSTAL & LABYRINTH; and THE STORYTELLER (1987–89), Henson’s acclaimed television series—a journey into the stranger, darker corners of European folklore. 🐦‍⬛🦔
The program will interweave clips & archival materials across Henson’s career, including rare materials provided by the Jim Henson Legacy: Henson’s fairy-tale-themed Wilkins Coffee commercials, the Pak-Nit Hansel and Gretel riff “Shrinkel and Stretchel,” and rare color footage of the Tinkerdee characters shot by Henson himself. The evening concludes with TALES OF THE TINKERDEE in its entirety, presented from an HD scan of the 1962 kinescope recording. 👑
The evening will be followed by a separate, free RSVP screening of three episodes of THE STORYTELLER—a rare chance to experience Henson’s extraordinary series on the big screen. 📖
🔔 Public free RSVPs are currently at capacity, though additional spots may be released. FAIRY TALES ticket buyers will receive access to a private RSVP for THE STORYTELLER. Ticketholders who have RSVP’d and checked in for the first program will receive priority re-entry for the second screening. See listings for full RSVP & admission details. 🔔

Here's a short tale accompanied by traditional Bambara singing and the sounds of the Kora. It unlocks one of the keys to success. This story was shared with an audience @philosophical_research_society in Los Angeles, California, last weekend. This is a clip from a two-hour session celebrating my return after more than 30 years and speaking on the power of story. Hope you enjoy the story and adopt one of the secrets to success for yourself. #babathestoryteller

This season of touring, presentations, and performances has begun with more than a few reflective moments. I spent much of my youth in Los Angeles wandering through bookstores, attending lectures, exploring spiritual traditions, and taking part in the cultural life of Southern California. Bookstores, especially, have always been places where I find community. I first learned about Manly P. Hall’s Philosophical Research Society through Dr. Alfred Ligon of the Aquarian Spiritual Center. Dr. Ligon and his wife, Bernice, operated one of the country’s oldest continuously running Black-owned bookstores. We affectionately called him “Doc,” and he was one of the first people I met after moving to Los Angeles. One day, Doc sent me to the PRS to find a couple of books he thought I should read. I found the books, but I also found a place I would return to many times for lectures, readings, study, and reflection. More than thirty years had passed since I last crossed its threshold when I was invited back to speak, share stories, and play the kora. Of course, I said yes. Yesterday was my return. Because it was Labor Day weekend, I expected only a few people, but that did not concern me. I have long believed that whether there are two people or a thousand, the moment is equally precious. Whoever is present is meant to be there. More than a dozen people came. We were an eclectic gathering of people from different walks of life. I told stories I had not shared in years. We sang, laughed, and even shared a few tears. When the presentation ended, no one seemed ready to leave. We stayed for hours talking, sharing, and making new friends. There is something deeply moving about returning to a place that helped shape you. More than thirty years ago, Doc sent a young man through those doors looking for books. Yesterday, that young man returned older, carrying a kora, a lifetime of experiences, and a few stories of his own. Thank you, Malik and Devon, for opening the doors of the Philosophical Research Society to me once again. It is another memory I will hold precious. #babathestoryteller

This September, we celebrate the many wonders of fairytales and folk stories through a series of illustrated presentations, film screenings, and workshops!  THROUGH MIRRORS, WEBS, & WOODS: A Month of Folk & Fairy Tales at PRS! As summer turns to fall and the long, bright days begin to darken, join PRS as we venture into another woodland in which things are not always as they seem. Along the way, we will spend time in enchanted castles beastly and beautiful; listen to West African stories told upon strings and the alluring songs of sirens; get a taste for ravenous trickster appetites and fearsome fairy tale kitchens; cast wishes with jinn and angels (or bargains with demon and death); recast notions of enchantment and madness in the animal-led Surrealist imagination; refresh psychological interpretations of heroines and witches; and encounter supernatural yokai beings of many forms. By turns exquisite and grotesque, wicked and wise, accursed and liberatory, what these global tales hold in common is their existence in worlds inherently magical and full of extraordinary transformations. Completing our amazing line-up of David Lynch / Twin Peaks lectures this month, we are celebrating Laura Palmer's birthday on Wednesday, July 22nd! Laura has meant many things to many people. The Log Lady says Laura is the one leading to the many. Laura describes herself as the "two". And, in the terror and transcendence of her splitness, we see Laura branch into forms natural and supernatural, cosmic and material, demonic and, to many viewers who “feel like they know her,” angelic. To honor Laura in all of her complexity, we’ll harken back to her mythic ancestors in Ovid’s Metamorphoses: Persephone (Proserpina), homecoming queen of the underworld, and the girls who become trees, birds, and snake-haired stone-gazers to escape bodily violation. We then turn to the modern mythos of Twin Peaks, in which sufferings and joys transfigure into bizarre objects like ceiling fans, traffic lights, creamed corn, drawer pulls, and pale horses, demonstrating how aesthetic correspondences act as psychic portals within the series, and in cherished aspects of David Lynch’s dreamy creative process. Come for the illuminating talk, stay for the chocolate bunnies and cherry pie! Visit prs.org/events for tickets and more info 🔥

Wednesday July 22! Come celebrate the birthday of Laura Palmer, dreamer of Twin Peaks, through a presentation on Laura’s story as a myth of metamorphosis! In-person and live-streaming event! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LAURA PALMER! SCREAMS, DREAMS, & MYTHS OF METAMORPHOSIS IN TWIN PEAKS with Devon Deimler, PhD Laura Palmer, percolate muse of Twin Peaks’ mysteries, was born on this day, July 22, 1972. Laura has meant many things to many people. The Log Lady says Laura is the one leading to the many. Laura describes herself as the two. And, in the terror and transcendence of her splitness, we see Laura branch into forms natural and supernatural, cosmic and material, demonic and, to many viewers who “feel like they know her,” angelic. Myth is known for its hybrid creatures and uncanny transformations between gods and animals, humans and objects, angels and monsters, underlings and kings. These strange fascinations are not only wonders of the imagination but look-alive images of emotional truth. Metamorphic myths portray the necessity of alteration during moments of crisis—when survival is a matter of changing form. Above (and below) all, we’ll look at the transformative faces and fates of Laura, from her plastic arrival to her nuclear creation myth in The Return: Part 8. Don’t miss this incredible talk! Get tix now at prs.org/events ✨ This talk is part of, “Places Wonderful and Strange: A Cinemyth Lecture Series on Lynch’s LA & the Mysteries of Twin Peaks” happening all of July!
