📸 Backing brilliant businesswomen who’d rather be off-camera. Portraits without the faff, that get YOU visible. See my work + how it all works 👇🏼
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
You can want better photos without wanting the photoshoot. Those two things are entirely allowed to coexist.

In fact, that describes a fairly large percentage of the women who book me.

So I don’t expect you to arrive confident, camera-ready or suddenly delighted at the prospect of having a lens pointed at you.

We talk first. We make a plan. We take our time. And I guide you through the bit you’d rather not have to think about.

You don’t need to become someone who loves having her photo taken. You just need photographs you love at the end of it.

Hate having your photo taken? I’ve built my whole approach around that. See how it works, including prices, via the link in my bio.

Using bold teal, orange, pink and chartreuse circles with white text, the slides explain the process from an initial chat and planning through to the portrait session and receiving the finished gallery within seven days. Two slides include photographs: one showing Fee holding her camera and another showing a female client during a natural moment. The carousel emphasises Fee’s reassuring, guided approach for women who dislike being photographed, ending with an invitation to get in touch. taken in Devon by @devonportraitphotographer

Hello, I’m Fee 👋🏼

I’m a Devon portrait photographer and I photograph brilliant businesswomen who would quite happily never have a camera pointed at them.

You don’t need to love having your photo taken. You don’t need to know how to pose. And you definitely don’t need to perform.

We’ll chat, probably drink tea, work through the awkward first bit and get to the good stuff.

Natural, considered portraits that look like you and give you photographs you’re actually happy to use.
You are the business. You need to be seen.

I just make that bit considerably less awful.

Linda booked me because of how comfortable my clients looked in the portfolio on my website.

Now she’s one of them.

That’s not a coincidence. My portfolio isn’t there to show you I can take a nice photo. It’s there so camera-shy people can see other camera-shy people looking fine, and think: maybe I would too.

Linda did. Here’s what she said afterwards:

“I am very camera shy, but Felicity made the whole shoot feel relaxed and put me at ease.”

You are not boring. You’re just far too familiar with yourself. The things you do every day. The way you work. The stories you’ve told a hundred times. The bits of your business you barely notice anymore because they’re simply what you do.

To somebody else, they’re the interesting bits.

It’s why I’m much more interested in photographing you as you actually are than inventing a shinier, more “brand” version of you.

Your business already has a personality. You already have a story. We don’t need to manufacture either of them.

Sometimes you just need somebody else to notice what you’ve stopped seeing.

That’s rather a large part of my job.

Need portraits without the faff ? Let me know 📸

You could assume that a great brand portrait means a face, front and centre. But you know what ? Faceless portraits work brilliantly. (& hands in particular are very expressive)

Faceless imagery, shots from behind, over the shoulder, hands & posture instead of a smile, is now genuinely recommended good practice for protecting people online. Even schools are being advised to think this way now.

A portrait doesn’t need a face to tell the truth about someone, your hands can sometimes say more than a straight on smile would.

So if the thought of a face-on shoot is putting you off, know that it’s not the only option. There’s another way in.

Everything you need to know to book is on my website.

I love this job. If that isnt already obvious.

I get to help people step up for their business and get seen, sometimes for the first time in years. I get to see where they work, the creativity behind it, the things they’ve built with their own hands.

I get to drive around one of the most beautiful counties in England for a living (yes, I’m biased, and no, I don’t care).

And then there’s watching those portraits actually get used. On a website, in a launch email, on a gallery bio someone’s finally proud of. That’s the bit that gets me every time.

Not a bad way to spend a Wednesday.

Everything you need to know to book is on my website.

Your business doesn’t have to look like everybody else’s. And neither do your photographs.

Some of the women I photograph are colourful, some are quieter. Some love a good chat, others would rather get on with what they’re doing.

My job isn’t to make them all look like somebody’s idea of a professional businesswoman.

It’s to take photographs that look like them, and work for the businesses they’ve built.

#devonbrandphotographer #devonbrandphotography #devonportraitphotographer #devonsmallbusiness #devonbusinesswomen Instagram carousel by Felicity Billen Photography showcasing natural, informal brand portraits of Devon businesswomen. The opening pink slide reads “Want Brand portraits that are less formal and more…you?” followed by eight photographs. These include a smiling woman wearing bright green glasses and a patterned jacket, a silver-haired woman in a colourful scarf, a blonde creative working beside a window, a woman in denim standing beside a vivid yellow doorway holding a pink artwork, a woman wearing a multicoloured knitted hat outdoors, a blonde woman enjoying a cup of tea in a garden, a smiling red-haired woman in a charcoal top, and a woman in a turquoise jumper standing beside a tree. The final pink slide reads “That’s my speciality. Brand portraits, without the faff.” The photographs celebrate individuality, personality and authentic professional portraits. taken in Devon by @devonportraitphotographer

Back in the summer, I spent a happy afternoon wandering around my house with my camera, photographing all the little things that catch my eye.
Partly because I love taking photographs, and partly because I thought it might be useful to have a collection of my own stock images.
Turns out I was rather ahead of myself. 🤣

I’ve been spending a lot more time looking at these four walls recently than I’d planned, courtesy of a gallbladder with an inflated sense of its own importance.

But I never tire of looking at the things around me. There’s a story attached to almost everything, and I rather like it that way.

I think a home should look like the person who lives in it. I think Mine certainly does.

And yes, there’s usually a cup of black Tea somewhere in the picture. Just out of shot. ☕

#devonbusinesswomen A collection of eight photographs taken around my home in Devon, capturing the little details that make it feel like mine. Colourful vintage fishing floats hanging against a wall, a gallery of framed coastal photographs, blue abstract paintings, a bookcase filled with books, plants and family photographs, a string of seashells, a brightly coloured geometric cushion on a terracotta chair and a wooden artist's hand against a softly lit wall. Natural light, gentle shadows, rich colours and interesting textures throughout. A personal glimpse into the home I've been spending rather more time in recently, surrounded by art, books, memories and treasured objects. I’m nearly 57, which seems a slightly ridiculous age to be, given that I’m fairly sure I was 35 about ten minutes ago.

My fifties have been quite the education. Some of it wonderful, some of it bloody awful, and quite a lot of it entirely unexpected.

I’ve changed careers, started a business, discovered new things about myself and had to rethink a few things I thought I knew.

I used to believe everything happens for a reason. I don’t anymore. Sometimes life is just horribly random, and you have to find your way through it.

But there’s still so much to enjoy, so much to be curious about and, thankfully, plenty to laugh at.

Including myself. Frequently.

#devonbrandphotographer #devonbrandphotography #devonportraitphotographer #devonsmallbusiness #devonbusinesswomen Instagram carousel titled “Things I’ve learnt in my 50s”, sharing nine personal reflections ahead of my 57th birthday. The slides explore starting again without losing the value of previous experience, recognising that being good at something and earning a living from it are two different things, learning to listen to your body, how losing people changes you, becoming more comfortable being yourself, finding pleasure in being a beginner again, rejecting other people’s definitions of success, becoming less concerned with looking younger and finding enjoyment in a life that hasn’t necessarily turned out as expected. The final slide reads: “I’m nearly 57. I haven’t got everything figured out. But I’m getting considerably better at knowing what matters to me. And I think that’s a rather good place to be. taken in Devon by @devonportraitphotographer

I’ve never met a tangent I didn’t want to follow.

Ask me a simple question and there’s every chance you’ll get a story involving three other people, a completely unrelated incident from 1987 and something my Dad once said.

We’ll get back to the original subject eventually. Probably.

And yes, I talk through pretty much the entirety of a photoshoot. Which, as it turns out, is rather useful when you’re photographing someone who’d much rather be somewhere else.

Natural loquaciousness and thirty years in retail taught me how to talk to just about anybody. Photography taught me what to do with all that conversation.

Funny how things work out, isn’t it?

#devonbrandphotographer #devonbrandphotography #devonportraitphotographer #devonsmallbusiness #devonbusinesswomen Five-slide photographic carousel by Felicity Billen, Devon brand portrait photographer. The opening slides use personal photographs and humorous text about being constitutionally incapable of staying on topic, following conversational tangents and getting distracted by red herrings. The following slides feature examples of Felicity’s portrait photography, including a woman photographed against a striking doorway and a creative at work. The text explains how, despite her tendency to wander in conversation, Felicity knows exactly what she wants to communicate through her photography, who she wants to photograph and what those images should do for their businesses. The carousel combines humour, personality and professional portraits to explain her straightforward, people-focused approach to brand photography. taken in Devon by @devonportraitphotographer

I’ve never understood why we’re so keen to erase the evidence of getting older.

Especially when I think about everything that’s happened in my own life, and how much of it has shaped the person I am today.
I know my face has changed. Some of those changes have been hard won. But it’s still my face, and I have no desire to pretend otherwise.

And that’s how I approach photographing other women, too. Good light, flattering angles and a bit of thoughtful editing? Absolutely. Turning you into someone you barely recognise? Not a chance.

I want you to look at your photographs and think, “That’s me. And I look bloody good.”

The photographs show a smiling red-haired woman holding a heart-patterned mug, a woman in turquoise laughing beside a tree, photographer Felicity Billen laughing while holding her camera, a silver-haired woman in an orange cardigan holding a mug, a thoughtful woman seated at a café table, and a woman smiling gently in a knitted hat. Bold white text across the photographs explains Felicity’s approach to portrait photography: preserving laughter lines, expressions, skin texture and individuality rather than editing away the evidence of lived experience. I’ve spent over 30 years working with people. One thing I’ve learnt is that you can’t be everybody’s cup of tea. And you shouldn’t try to be.

Some women want the full brand photography experience. Mood boards, outfit changes, carefully planned locations, a make up artist and a whole afternoon devoted to creating content.

Lovely. There are brilliant photographers who do exactly that.

I’m much more interested in making the whole thing straightforward. Getting to know you, understanding what you do and taking photographs that actually look like you.

No elaborate production. No pretending to be somebody you’re not. And absolutely no requirement to laugh at a laptop.

Just properly good portraits of a woman who’s got a business to run.

Felicity Billen photography | Devon brand portrait photographer Instagram carousel promoting Felicity Billen Photography, a Devon brand portrait photographer. The opening slide reads, “I’m not trying to be the photographer for everyone in Devon,” followed by “That would be a terrible business plan. And a fairly exhausting one.” The slides explain that Felicity photographs women who have built businesses they’re proud of but would rather be anywhere than in front of a camera. Women who don’t want to perform, pose awkwardly or spend an afternoon pretending to laugh at a laptop. Her approach is straightforward, friendly and unfussy, producing professional portraits that look like the women themselves. The carousel ends by explaining that she isn’t trying to persuade everyone to book her, just making it easy for the right woman to realise she’s found her photographer. taken in Exeter by @devonportraitphotographer
