I had the pleasure of being in Toronto this week for the opening of the @torontobiennial and asked by @artbasel to write about how the city’s art ecosystem is transforming - from the Biennial to the new @thelatfoundation to the artist-run spaces that have been essential to its backbone.
Talking with @drkmontague, @novembergp, @chloe.catan, @ilanashamoon @kentmonkman, @blairswann, and @rajniperera, what struck me is how much Toronto’s hybridity (something | very much grew up with) - 51% of its residents are born abroad — has quietly become a blueprint for its narrative. Toronto’s vibrancy in this moment and its cross-cultural fluency is what the global arts sector needs more of right now. Equally important is the need for increased private/public partnerships and investment in the infrastructure that allows artists to thrive, from affordable spaces to foundations (like Lassonde and @thevegafoundation) to an increase in patron culture supporting the creation and presentation of new work. taken in Toronto, Canada by @devyanisaltzman

As the Autumn Season begins, I’m excited to share the artistic programmes I’m proud to support. I’ve always believed that supporting artists means more than championing the work we love. It means creating the conditions for bold, challenging and unexpected work to be made - and making space for creative teams to take risks.
This week the @royalcourttheatre opened its much-anticipated remount of Man to Man, starring @swinton.tilda, as part of the 70th anniversary season.

It’s a landmark moment for the Court’s 70th, and a rare return to live theatre for one of the most distinctive performers of her generation. Proud to be part of the Royal Court family as an Artistic Associate, and excited for where Man to Man travels next - Edinburgh, Berlin, and New York.
Congratulations to AD and CEO, @mrdavebyrne, the original creators and the amazing Court team involved in bringing this back to the stage.

So thrilled to see @edyanganiose’s appointment as Artistic Director of @zeitzmocaa. Fantastic news and a testament to our collective need to invest in inspired artistic leadership. Her time at MACBA and her sustained commitment to artists from Africa and the diaspora across two decades makes her exactly the right person to build on Koyo's legacy.
