_SCULPTURAL ASSEMBLY SYSTEM

It took 4 years for me to develop the skills to produce it. To develop the courage and confidence to share it.

From a digital sketch, to a cryptic sculpture, a modular system of pieces translated into a 3D printed prototype, finally documented in form of etched brushed brass, w/ patina floating on top of a wall.

It was hard to claim that this piece was done, until it was. And I’m really happy with how it’s turned out, and what it’s taught me.

My artwork explores materials, forms, and the synthesis of digital and physical craft.

Coming from the world of architecture, industrial and communication design, it expresses my perception of the world as a system of assemblies

that retains beauty in isolation, in combination, and in composition.

Even when imperfect. Even when jumbled.

The pieces document a spiritual experience, memory, + learning that I’ve collected in the past

dextrostat is a Mumbai-based trans disciplinary artist whose practice navigates the intersections of art, craft, architecture, and design. His work examines how systems of making, memory, and meaning are constructed, negotiated, and transformed across spatial, technological, and cultural contexts.

Positioned between obsessively systematic technical precision and raw emotional intuition, his practice pursues an in-between space that resists disciplinary boundaries. It operates fluidly within and beyond the carefully curated interiors of institutional spaces and the contested terrain of the street; between academic and discursive frameworks of design and the industrial assemblies and workflows of production; between analog craft: drawing, spray paint, and hand-built processes + advanced digital methodologies, computational design, 3D printing and fabrication.

In college, winning a Kyoorius was the dream. Last year, @vari0.us won across three disciplines (Architecture, Product & Identity)

This year, I am a jury member,

Varun Mehta is a transdisciplinary designer from Mumbai, India, with a practice that spans architectural design, identity design, communication design and product design.

Graduating as an architect in 2017 from Mumbai University, his early work focused on how spatial design influences human behavior.

Mehta has worked in key roles at firms such as Studio 823 (Samir Raut, Faizan Khatri), The Busride Design Studio (Zameer and Ayaz Basrai) and Studio Tessera (Sagarika Suri).

In this time, he honed his skills across various crafts such as material studies, architectural research , storytelling through design, up-cycling of construction waste, and sustainable fabrication technologies.
Mehta’s early work exploits have focused on architecture, commercial hospitality projects, residential interiors, co-working spaces, educational spaces as well as web & graphic design.

In 2020, Mehta founded ARC.HV, a non-profit digital platform that unites creatives across disciplines through self-initiated projects, such as Virtual Gods, India’s first virtual art exhibit, and an Open Source Design Library.

In 2022, he completed a Master’s in Computational Design from the Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia, exploring parametric workflows, machine learning, AI; through design for social impact.Mehta has also been an advocate for skateboarding culture in Mumbai, playing a crucial role in developing skateparks and promoting the social impact of public spaces. He is currently the creative director at Urban Monkey where he focuses on making quality design accessible to the masses while fostering creative industrial design innovation, in India.

[CRYPTQ MSG SYSTMS]

Developing cryptic, modular forms that represent Latin letterforms
Exploring composition through a system of abstracted type.

*The most direct reference point would be Kufic script from Islamic architecture, reinterpreted through a post-model, digital lens.
*Atypography as an art movement validated these explorations.
*Street art, too, has always engaged with type in cryptic ways.

These forms are a reflection of creative insecurity —
a resistance to being seen clearly,
yet a deep urge to express.

Excerpt from Product Design & Development

The dial’s design draws from the Vesica Pisces - the sacred intersection where binaries meet, symbolizing the intersection of opposites: the past & future.
Into the Present

This form, found in Carlo Scarpa’s Brion Tomb where it explores duality at an architectural scale, is reimagined here at the scale of a timepiece.

This geometry is redrawn in form of a triple-circle composition, where the intersection of two primary circles gives birth to a larger third,
the in-between.

The form is generated through parametric scripting, considering specific fabrication tolerances.

Deploying architectural workflows to support industrial design

An excerpt from Eden, an airbnb in Igatpuri
@edenvilla.co

Our architectural vision extends beyond space and into the objects within it.

Furniture and interactive pieces were designed to bring the inhabitant closer to the present moment —
turning everyday interactions into part of the spatial experience.

Waste wood from the site was repurposed into ashtrays,
door handles, dining tables, stools, incense holders, and small games like chess.

Custom interlocking furniture systems were fabricated in the city
and transported to the remote site for easy assembly.
