This week’s issue features a powerful in-depth article by @markelecullins on Tom Miller, his murals, and the annual celebration I launched six years ago in his honor. What began as a love letter to a Baltimore visionary has grown into a citywide tradition.

Tom’s first public mural in Baltimore — “However Far the Stream Flows, It Never Forgets Its Source” — is fading and crumbling. We are in the early stages of advocating for its preservation, and we need the community behind us.

Join Friends of Tom Miller and become part of the stewardship of his public art and the future of Tom Miller Week. 🔗 Link in bio.

Deep gratitude to the Miller family, collectors, institutions, and every supporter who has poured into this work over the years. Because of you, Tom Miller Week was voted Best Baltimore Tradition of 2025 by Baltimore Magazine and we also received a Mayoral Salute from @mayorbmscott in 2025.

Special thank you to Project Manager @igchrisbrooks , @councilmanjjones , Mrs. Beverly Carter, @mikepcobb , members of the Oliver community, and our longtime supporters who continue to help shape what Tom Miller Week is today.

Baltimore’s cultural memory is worth protecting and it starts with us.

We are deeply honored to receive the inaugural Legacy Award from the @baltimorebeat .

Thank you for recognizing the importance of preserving Black media and the stories that shape our communities. We are grateful to continue this work with our community.

This recognition belongs to our incredible staff, Board of Directors, the generations who cared for the AFRO Archives before us, and the supporters, artists, researchers, volunteers, and partners who make this work possible. Deyane Moses, Director of Programs & Partnerships, accepted the award on behalf of Afro Charities.

As we prepare to open the Martha E. Murphy Research Institute (MEMRI) in 2027, we remain committed to protecting, preserving, and sharing Black history for generations to come.

Tom Miller week is back and we are grateful for your support over the past 5 years. This year we are focusing our attention on Miller's public works of art.

Paint is peeling.
Brick is exposed.
Art History is at risk.

Tom Miller’s first public mural in Baltimore is in critical condition—and we cannot afford to lose it!

Join us Wednesday, February 18 at 6 PM for a virtual Tom Miller Day gathering as we officially launch a phased restoration effort for However Far the Stream Flows, It Never Forgets Its Source (1991), located at North Avenue and Harford Road in Baltimore. MD.

For more than 30 years, this mural has stood as a reminder that no matter how far we travel, we must never forget who we are or where we come from. Today, weather, pollution, and time threaten its future. Now it’s our turn to show up for it.

During this free public event, we will share:

• The urgency behind the restoration
• A proposed phased preservation plan
• How you can support through donations, advocacy, and community partnerships

This effort is led by Friends of Tom Miller and Blackives, LLC, with support from Brooks Media and Black Art Today Foundation.

RSVP on Eventbrite (link in bio).

Preserving the source is preserving his legacy.

Tom Miller Week is an annual, community-centered celebration honoring the life, work, and legacy of Tom Miller through public programs, storytelling, exhibitions, and preservation initiatives across Baltimore and beyond. The celebration was voted Best of Baltimore for Tradition by Baltimore Magazine in 2025.
