We are deeply honored to receive the inaugural Legacy Award from the @baltimorebeat .

Thank you for recognizing the importance of preserving Black media and the stories that shape our communities. We are grateful to continue this work with our community.

This recognition belongs to our incredible staff, Board of Directors, the generations who cared for the AFRO Archives before us, and the supporters, artists, researchers, volunteers, and partners who make this work possible. Deyane Moses, Director of Programs & Partnerships, accepted the award on behalf of Afro Charities.

As we prepare to open the Martha E. Murphy Research Institute (MEMRI) in 2027, we remain committed to protecting, preserving, and sharing Black history for generations to come.

We’re going LIVE!

Join @afrocharities’ Content Creator Fellow, Dr. Andre White (@redactedhistory_ ) and Director of Programs and Partnerships, Deyane Moses, on Friday, July 31st at 1 PM ET for an Instagram Live conversation about his experience researching and creating content from the @afronews archives.

Afro Charities’ Content Creator Fellowship supports content creators as they research and create original content using the AFRO American Newspapers Archives. AFRO News was founded in Baltimore, MD in 1892 and is one of the longest-running Black news organizations in the country.

Afro Charities cares for and activates the AFRO’s historic archives. To learn more, sign up for Afro Charities’ newsletter at the link in our bio.

“You are enough.”
That’s the charge and affirmation I left with attendees who came out to support @baltimorebeat and its inaugural Legacy Gala last Friday.

So many of us have big dreams like preserving Black media, uplifting stories that make most uncomfortable but need to be told. Amplifying the voices in neighborhoods and communities often overlooked, just like The Beat. And I hope the night served not only as a testament to the work already done here in Baltimore but of what’s possible.

Thank you @lisa__snowden @_bigayo_ + @skamidi for trusting me to guide everyone through the night.

Thank you everyone in attendance for supporting and preserving Black Media. Congratulations to all the awardees.

Thanks to everyone who joined us on Saturday, June 6 for Dreams in Bloom, Afro Charities’ second annual fundraiser. And what a joy it was to celebrate Eddie and Sylvia Brown for their decades of transformative philanthropy in Baltimore and beyond!

We are so grateful to our friends, family, community members, and supporters who make this work possible day in and day out. Your presence and investment in sustaining Afro Charities and the AFRO Archives is humbling.

So much beauty, sweetness & joy in one place. Thank you to the Browns for the opportunity to give you your flowers, and for all you’ve done for Baltimore and beyond 🌸
