Dancing quinces coming out of a magic garden, now that fits to the gloomy time ahead, bringing ancient stories and traditions back to life.

This eccentric fruit also seems a bit out of time with its knobbly shape - not convenient to prepare or to eat. Yet, if you give it a bit of attention, time and love, magical things will happen!

I was gifted these gems out of a truly enchanted place @magicgardenkochwerkstatt Thank you again so much!
And then came the idea to capture these bright fruits in a special and somehow artistic way, inspired by @bealubas , where they appear dancing almost in a ghostly way.

After the photo shoot comes the preparation in the kitchen. I have to admit that I didn’t exhaust yet the culinary potential of quinces. A bit of jam, some cinnamon scented liquor (which I will do again), but I think there’s much more to discover.

Do you have any tips for further recipes? I would be happy if you share them!
And let me know what you think of the dancing quinces 😊

Cheers to… no not the weekend, but to Monday!

Let’s change the narrative that you have to hustle your way through the weekdays until finally life begins again on Friyay and then you celebrate your resurrection with some booze.
What about celebrating the beginning of a new week with a healthy but not less exciting bubbly drink?

I’m talking about kombucha! I loved that fermented tea-based drink ever since and am so happy that by now it is available in various flavors from several producers.

One that I love for its herbal character is the kombucha from @voelkel . It contains amongst other aromatics lemon verbena, mint, nettle, elderflower and marigold blossoms. Doesn’t that all sound very enchanting?

Inspired by the ingredients and needing to cut down my balcony herbs before the colder days, I added some pungent basil leaves and fresh lemon verbena to the drink.

Take a fancy glass, add herbs and ice cubes and pour a refreshing drink to cheer on the opportunities that this new week can bring! Santé!

Puff pastry cones with whipped cream or Schillerlocken as we say in Germany. An almost forgotten pastry that could be found in fine pastry shops many years ago, but by now it’s turning into a fading memory of something that my grandfather used to enjoy eating.

Wanting to keep that memory alive and enjoyable, I bought already some time ago several metal cones. When you have them it’s quite easy to make the pastry cones!

Cut a store bought fresh puff pastry into 3 cm broad stripes along the long side of the rectangular dough. Butter the cones outside and wrap one stripe of dough around each cone, place on a baking tray. Brush with egg-wash and sprinkle some crystal sugar over them. Bake at 200°C for 20-25 minutes, cover with aluminum foil towards the end if they’re browning too fast. Let cool and remove from the metal cones, fill with whipped cream and jam.

Enjoy!

An apple with pink flesh? A green cauliflower? A purple turnip cabbage?

As soon as the colors of produce aren’t as expected, we tend to notice them with more awareness, getting conscious of its peculiarity.

But is it increasing the value of the fruit or the vegetable? Or is it rather a reminder that actually the whole color palette in our natural food is a little miracle?

Yes we know red tomatoes, orange pumpkin, green cucumbers. Still, maybe just sometimes we shall be in awe of what nature is creating out of soil, air and sunlight. No matter if the shade is surprising or the good old familiar.

Do you have a favorite „special“-colored fruit or vegetable?

Inspired by our recent trip to Napoli and its islands, I made a layered dish out of baked eggplant slices, tomato sauce, mozzarella and parmesan cheese. Flecked with plenty of basil from our balcony, we enjoyed this dish called Parmigiana to the fullest.
The stringy cheese, little lakes of olive oil in tomato sauce and smooth bites of eggplant, mmh.

This Italian dish needs some preparation time, but with a tomato sauce made in advance, the effort is getting less.
My latest kitchen hack is that I’m preparing a kind of basic sauce out of 2,5 kg canned tomatoes, just with garlic, onions and a few spices. Then I freeze it in several freezer bags. Depending on the dish, you can add further ingredients and seasoning.

Time to make another batch of tomato sauce soon again!

Greetings from my kitchen where stone fruits are still playing a main role, aren’t they just beautiful to look at?

When they are entering the house in too much abundance, I like to pit and freeze them - collected and mixed fruits are making very good jam.
Just waiting for my next copper pot to be restored, then the preserving fun can begin.

Have a vibrant start into this last Monday of September!

A little inspiration for tomato season.

During a recent vacation in Campania, Italy, I had an eye-opening experience regarding one of the probably most prepared Italian salad, the Caprese salad. Or tomato mozzarella as it’s widely known.

In a beach bar I was served this dish, wanting a refreshing lunch snack. The ball of mozzarella was sitting in full on the plate, not pre-cut or alternately layered with the tomato as I am used to.
What I judged as a bit sloppy in preparation turned out to be the game-changer in indulging this dish as it should be done!

Choose a juicy mozzarella like the one made out of buffalo milk and cut only on the serving plate, not a cutting board. So you keep all the juicy goodness and end up with a delicious sauce to wipe up with some bread, it’s heaven!

Today’s equinox is a marking point in the year, the beginning of a new season.
These last days were accompanied by the #foodartprojectsept26 challenge with the oh so fitting theme The Art of Light.

Now that we’re heading into the darker season, it is wise to bring some light with you, an inner harvest as if to say. Like the grapes that once were hanging in the garden, sweetened by sunlight, now decorating the kitchen table and waiting to nourish you.

What were the light moments of this summer that you’re taking into the next season? by @dezi_licious

The Art of Light ✨

Today is the last day of summer - and the last day of this wonderful creative challenge The Art of Light.

Honestly I didn’t expect how much this challenge would do with me. Not only that it expanded my view on light, increased again my attentiveness to it and allowed me to apply my creativity without limits (though I’m just starting to explore these boundaries).

But it also created this encouraging and inspiring connectedness amongst food photographers with a very warm tone towards one another. I learned from others regarding their personal approaches to the themes and got glimpses into their creative world within that particular framework.

I’m grateful for every new face here following me along as well as everyone who is supporting and encouraging me throughout my creative journey. ♥️

So today’s picture is a very personal one, showing why I started with food photography.
A vintage wooden table, some seasonal flowers in a vase, home made cake (plum & buckwheat, so good!), a cup of tea and a cookbook that I’m exploring. It’s actually the essence of my approach to cooking and baking: living with the seasons, taking the time to create something healthy and delicious, enjoying life in those little culinary moments.

And to capture all that, I found photography as a wonderful tool and one more asset in my creative bouquet.

My heartfelt thanks go out to the ones who initiated and accompanied this challenge in the loveliest way @bealubas @mridulkawatra @foodartproject 🙏♥️

The Art of Light - A quiet glow

The first apples of the year, if autumn would be expressed by a fruit it would be this one.
As basic as they might seem, they’re also as versatile. Ordinary but in their quiet glow a real treasure.

„Shall we go to that little hill, the one where all the apple trees are standing?
„Oh yes! Let’s also have a look if the walnuts are already coming down from the big trees.“

They did not…

The Art of Light - color & light

This is simply a shot from our high bed on the balcony with basil and blooming coriander.

The light there isn’t available in abundance, but enough for something to grow. The green color of the herbs is standing out of the shadow as if to say There’s no place for darkness.

I might add that the basil is growing in abundance there over the last few months. What once started as a little pot from the supermarket turned into a recognizable bush.
The potential to grow was there, always, it just needed space and the right soil to develop. Maybe we can take this as an encouraging lesson from Mother Nature.

The Art of Light - after dark

This picture holds a special place in my heart, not necessarily because it’s a „good“ one (or because of the super delicious gingerbread cake on it I had made), but because it was one of the first I took with a professional camera not even 10 months ago.

Looking at it now, I realize how much I have learned, not only talking about manual mode, but also about how to work with light.
And I know that there is still so much to learn. But being inspired and getting encouraged by such a lovely community, I’m really looking forward to this path of creativity!

No dialogue today, just a feeling of contentment.
