From the berets of the Black Panther Party to the distinctive monochrome keffiyeh scarf, many wearable items have become synonymous with liberation movements. Essayist and content creator, Dominique Kistan, explores the complex history of 'wearable allyship' and the merging of activism and aesthetic. 🔗 Head to the link in bio. · [ID: 1: Three members of the Black Panther Party wearing leather jackets and black berets. Some of the strongest work I saw this year at Frieze London had one thing in common: unexpected material combinations. It truly felt like a celebration of craft, iteration, experimentation and storytelling. This month I’ve been trying to immerse myself in different forms of media. Many of the podcasts, readings and short-form documentaries I’ve encountered have focused on community building, art museums and institutions as spaces of repair, iterative daily practices, political shifts and their impact on the art market, art legislation in the post-brexit world, and writing art criticism. This is by no means an extensive list of everything that I’ve read, listened to or attended this month, nor does it include any assigned readings* I’m sure things will get more cohesive. #contemporaryart #curating #mediadiet #rca by @dgkstn
Reflecting on September and realising just how exciting making a (life changing) decision and following through really is. Leaving my full time agency job at the beginning of this month was daunting but studying an MA in Curating Contemporary Art at the @royalcollegeofart wasn’t an opportunity I could pass up. My day to day looks a little different now. It’s such a poignant reminder of how quickly we’re able to adapt to new experiences and carve out “new normals”. I’m feeling very grateful for the people I’ve met so far and the lively conversations we’ve had. I’m so excited to develop my curatorial practice over the next year (and beyond). Here’s what I’ve been up to this month ! ➡️ I attended the PV of Monika Sosnowska’s work at @southlondongallery. Her practice explores architecture and urban transformation, creating sculptures from industrial materials like steel and concrete. Her particular focus on how architecture and space can have an impact on people has stayed on my mind. The Raw and the Cooked @saatchi_gallery A group show of 11 contemporary artists who explore themes like spiritual uncertainty, societal struggles and political instability by channelling medieval traditions and aesthetics. The sun and the moon: art inspired by the celestial @saatchi_gallery An extensive exhibition on how the two celestial bodies have inspired creativity, cultures, and belief systems throughout time. The exhibition presented a broad range of works from archival materials to instillations, demonstrating humanity’s long-standing preoccupation with the sun and the moon. Watched a screening @photobookcafe, and got a great insight into how London-based street photographers initiated and continue to iterate their practice. Feeling big big feelings at the @tate in response to seeing the Ana Mendieta show. An incredible opportunity to see a large number of her works and how she iterated and developed her practice using recognisable motifs across a multitude of formats and materials. I remember studying her work for the first time during sixth form, so this was a bit of a pinch me moment (despite whatever personal feelings I might have about the decision to omit ele by @dgkstn
Sometimes love is defined by making sure there is food on the table, at the cost of being physically or emotionally available. The carefully portrayed moments of vulnerability shared by the characters on screen challenge broad ideas about masculinity - especially what it is to be a Black African father.

Congratulations to @akinoladaviesjr @kingxdavies and the whole team behind My Father’s Shadow
