POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I found this bar of soap from Notre Dame’s Morris Inn in a box of uncatalogued things in the Flannery O’Connnor archives at Georgia State College and University in Milledgeville, GA, where O’Connor earned undergraduate degrees in Sociology and Literature in 1945.

O’Connor visited Notre Dame twice. The first time was in April of 1957, at the encouragement of her friend Robert Fitzgerald, the famed poet and translator of The Odyssey, who was a poet-in-residence at Notre Dame that year. Fitzgerald writes about this in his intro to O’Connor’s posthumous book of stories Everything that Rises Must Converge (see 3rd photo).

During that visit O’Connor delivered a now-famous lecture titled “Some Aspects of the Grotesque in Southern Fiction” and read her canonical story “A Good Man Is Hard to Find.” A recording of the event is housed in @ndarchives (It is one of only a few recordings of O’Connor in existence.)

Her second visit was in 1962, just 2 years before her death due to complications from Lupus. If you’re interested in more O’Connor archival content, come on over to my X account: [at]poorerthandead taken in Georgia College & State University by @dgriff8
