Volume up. See what I did there? IYKYK

To use Juddy's words (always superior to mine - no joke) this will be a deconstructed Johnson's reunion of sorts.

For those of you that don't keep up here, Justin is releasing a new book!! Fiction I believe. He and fellow JBB alumn, Dave Griffith, will be reading! I'll be doing a Business Jazz set! Should be a fun and intimate event! I'll drop the FB event link in the comments. Hope to see you there!!

I’m excited to announce that you can now pre-order a copy of my first photobook, The Concord Mall!

In the summer of 2023, I found myself traveling to Elkhart, IN, on a weekly basis. My therapist had recently relocated and was only offering in-person sessions. As I drove east from South Bend, IN, I passed by the Concord Mall. This is a mental mile marker for me; it marks the point at which I exit my current life in South Bend and find myself in my childhood home.

On my first trip to Elkhart, I had my film camera and some free time before my session. I entered the mall through the side door I was most familiar with, next to the JCPenney. At first glance, it was like entering a time machine; the lighting, smell, and atmosphere brought back memories of my teenage years when I would browse the Sam Goody store. Now, just a shell of that store remains.

As I took my photos, I would strike up conversations with the mall walkers, listen to the Goo Goo Dolls playing in the overhead speakers, and smell the aroma of Enzo’s Pizza.

For the following six months, I would stop by the mall, take many photos, and grab a combo #2 from Enzo Pizza before heading back home.

At the end of the year, the news broke that the Concord Mall was closing permanently and would be renovated into a mixed-use business park.

Through this series of events, I managed to capture the last year of this mall in its final days. I look back at the photos I took and feel fortunate that I was able to capture the beauty and charm of the mall before it was gone.

Huge thanks to @keurdesignstudio for creating a stunning cover for this book. She perfectly translated the few references I shared into exactly what I had envisioned.

A heartfelt thank you as well to @dgriff8 for his invaluable help in editing the copy.

#TeacherAppreciationWeek Chapter 6.2: This post is dedicated to all my former (and, okay, three current who are just too wonderful not to include) students who taught me more than I taught them. There’s a heck of a story to accompany each of these photos. All of these incredible people were once classified as my students— but along the way, they have taught me about how to be a better teacher and person. (Sometimes they have also taught me specific things, too, like how to use Snapchat, Slack, or Otter, the best books to read that might help me connect with students, or something about #sports) I’m more grateful to all of you than I have words to express. Keep shining + keep making the bigger world a better place. (Also, it could easily take me more than two posts— and some of these go back so far that you can see how much camera resolution has improved. 😂) #arted #journalismeducation #teachersofinstagram #studentwork #colearning #smarterthanme #studentappreciation

#TeacherAppreciationWeek Chapter 5: Posting this in the middle of the night because I’ve taught with, learned from, and tried to save the world alongside these two men at all sorts of unexpected hours. They both have always made me wish the days were longer.
We weathered storms together (and created a few, too), fixed every form of technology (and decided which to avoid), brewed each other endless cups of coffee, solved all/none of art’s problems, and made each other feel purpose that it’s honestly been hard for me to match in all the off seasons.
Dave and Brandon, when it comes to teaching and friendship, you are my ideals and my idealism. Miss and love you both. I keep dreaming up excuses to end up back in the same place, but it’s all a little blurry.
