“In the darkness, two shadows, reaching through the hopeless, heavy dusk. Their hands meet, and light spills in a flood like a hundred golden urns pouring out of the sun.”

This is the final line from The Song of Achilles, one of Carmen’s favorite books. It comes after Achilles and Patroclus have been laid to rest together, their ashes joined, their souls reunited beyond this life.

We often spoke about what might come after this world with a shared certainty: that if there’s something beyond all this, we would find each other in it. Like in the story, we decided our ashes would be mixed, and this line would be engraved wherever we came to rest.

This line has carried me through the darkest nights this past year. It reminds me that she isn’t gone - just waiting beyond the veil, where one day, I’ll find her hand again. by @dhfabs

Carmen, today marks four years since our wedding and my heart aches with gratitude and loss. We had plans for an elopement in New York City, but COVID changed everything, and with less than three months to spare, we had to start over.

With the help of Celery Jones + friends we transformed a bare brewery warehouse into something magical. It became a space worthy of you, filled with love and the warmth you always brought to my life.

I find myself missing you more than I can express. But even through the heartache, I’m grateful for the life we built and the love that will never fade.

Six years ago today, Carmen and I got married. It was 2020, and the world was a mess, but I knew who I wanted beside me. I wish we were celebrating together today. I miss you, I love you, and I’m grateful I got to be your husband. by @dhfabs

Every milestone, I pull out Carmen's journals. She kept them faithfully from the time she was fourteen until the first year we were together. Then she stopped. Years later, after her first diagnosis, she began writing again. It's easy to wonder if you did enough for the person you love. These pages bring me a lot of peace. They remind me that I gave her what I always hoped I could: a life filled with love, adventure, and comfort. I miss you everyday, Carmen. by @dhfabs

today is for my mom 🤍

she would have been 38 today… and if i know anything about her, she’d be somewhere in the sun, dressed beautifully, holding me in one arm and my Dad with the other. Dad and I still carry her with us everywhere and we always will.

happy birthday, mom.
i hope wherever you are, there’s warm sunshine, soft blankets, beautiful landscapes, and all the kisses.

Hi, I’m Monty the Pomeranian.

My story starts with the woman who wanted me her whole life. My Mom. ♥️

When my Mom got sick, my Dad brought me home to her. I became her shadow, her comfort, a reason for her to smile and laugh as she played with me on even her hardest of days. I loved her with all of my tiny little heart, but she loved me first. She loved me before we ever met.

My Mom still watches over me, but my Dad takes care of me here on Earth. We miss her every day, but we see her everywhere we go. Morning coffee runs, long walks at the park, library naps, car rides and more.

She wrote about me in her journals so this Instagram is like my journal now too. A place to share the life she dreamed for me, and the joy I still get to bring into the world. I hope I make you smile the way I made her smile. The way I smiled when I looked at her.

10/10/2020 - Of course that was the date. We didn’t do random. We didn’t do “whatever works.” We liked things that were intentional and a little eerie in their symmetry. With you, everything had a meaning behind it. by @dhfabs

Happy Birthday, Carmen. Today, I remember you in one of your strongest moments to - standing beside me at nearly 16,000 feet on Chimborazo, just four months after finishing chemo. Most people would have been recovering quietly, you were climbing mountains. I carry your adventurous spirit with me everyday. by @dhfabs
