Dialectic Podcast 58: Adam Mastroianni!

@a_m_mastroianni is a psychologist who writes some of my favorite essays on the internet. His newsletter Experimental History just crossed 100K subscribers.

Adam's writing is usually about science, culture, and what to do with your life. Reading his writing makes obscure ideas feel intuitive.

We cover:
- why science is stuck
- the prestige trap
- conversational doorknobs
- why smart people end up in lives they doon't like
- the coffee bean test
- writing to find out what you think
- his upcoming book, "The Strangest Idea in the World"

If you've ever read an amazing essay on SS with a black & white photo at the top, it was probably Adam's.

“I think just being annoyed about the world is quite a useful attribute as a CEO... why does it have to be like this?”

Immad has built @mercuryfi with extreme helpfulness and irrational effort at the core its product philosophy.

Immad Akhund is a 4x founder who decided banking didn’t need to suck, especially given how central it is to every entrepreneur’s journey.

Nearly a decade in, he hopes to fight decay and build a company that gets better over time, not worse. 1-in-3 startups use Mercury, and he’s betting that the next 10 years of entrepreneurship will be greater than the last.

How do you tell a real expert from a confident faker when you're not an expert yourself?

C. Thi Nguyen on the awful dilemma at the center of modern life.

“We are surrounded by true experts in forms of value we know nothing about. And we’re surrounded by posers and fakers and exploiters. And telling the difference requires expertise we don’t have.”

You can love someone and still get very good at noticing everything wrong with them.

Ian Rogers on the magic and imperfection in a partner, and choosing which one you keep looking for:

"If you're looking for disloyalty, you'll find it. If you're looking for loyalty, you'll find it. Choose what you're looking for."

"All relationships end. It's a question of how."

Ever feel like someone could’ve had the whole conversation without you?

Adam Mastroianni on how to respond without taking over the conversational floor: with nods, eye contact, and little “uh-huhs” that tell someone you’re listening, not just waiting for your turn to speak.

Too drained by your job to imagine starting something of your own?

Immad Akhund, CEO of Mercury, went from being constantly exhausted after a 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. workday to working 9 am to midnight on his own startup and still feeling energized.

Immad says: “time is about energy, not about time. If you’re doing something that gives you energy, you can do that for a really long time.”

Immad Akhund grew up poor, but never assumed success was reserved for people more "extraordinary" than him. His family told him stories of an ancestor who ruled empires a few centuries back, and that knowledge was part of his inheritance too.

“I might be poor, and I might not have anything, but I always felt like I could achieve anything.”

“I don’t think I’m amazing or anything, but I also don’t think everyone else is that amazing either. We’re all trying to figure stuff out.”
