DIAS Registrar and CEO Dr Eucharia Meehan, Professor Emeritus Ruairí Ó hUigínn, Professor Máire Ní Mhaonaigh and Professor David Stifter were delighted to visit President Catherine Connolly on Wednesday.

During the visit, the President was presented with a copy of the recently published Navigatio Sancti Brendani — the latest scholarly edition of the medieval Latin account of the voyage of St Brendan - replacing the copy she presented to President Trump earlier in the month.

Thank you to President Connolly for the invitation and for her warm hospitality.

Ahead of the Voyage of St Brendan symposium this Thursday, Professor David Stifter offers a preview of what attendees can look forward to as leading international experts gather at DIAS to explore one Ireland’s most celebrated medieval narratives and its lasting impact on European literature, history and folklore.

The day will also mark the launch of a new English edition and translation of the text, published by DIAS as part of its distinguished Latin book series.

🇮🇸 Over the past month, the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) has been carrying out an extensive magnetotelluric (MT) survey across Hekla, Torfajökull and Tindfjallajökull, including areas north of Eyjafjallajökull in southeastern Iceland, substantially extending the site network established last year.

The fieldwork is led by DIAS, with Dr Duygu Kiyan as Principal Investigator, together with DIAS postdoctoral researcher Dr Maximiliano Pavez. Duygu has now returned to Dublin, while the field
team continues in Iceland to complete the survey.

Using Phoenix Geophysics MT systems from the MASTER MT Infrastructure, the team is collecting data to help image the electrical structure
beneath these volcanic systems.

Many thanks to Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson, Olgeir Sigmarsson and Björn Oddsson (University of Iceland), Knútur Árnason (previously at ÍSOR),
and all the dedicated team members who have contributed since last year: Giuseppe Maggio, Dieno Diba, Dmitry Molodtsov, Maurice Weber, Colin Hogg, Fionn Murray, Emma Chambers and Jean-Baptiste Tary (DIAS); Kamila Diaz Navarro (Goethe University Frankfurt); and Svetlana Kovacikova (Czech
Academy of Sciences).

The research is funded by the Research Ireland Frontiers for the Future Programme.

Long days, challenging conditions and spectacular Icelandic landscapes — all to better understand what is happening beneath these volcanoes 🌋📡

Today, we said a final farewell to our beloved friend and colleague, Dr Dmitri Grigoriev, at a beautiful and deeply moving service in the Garden Chapel at Mount Jerome.

Dmitri joined DIAS in 2011 as our first Head of Information Technology and gave more than 15 years of loyal and dedicated service to the Institute. He was a highly valued member of our Senior Management Team, bringing considerable technical and academic expertise, as well as an unfailing curiosity about and support for the research and advanced studies taking place across DIAS.

Above all, Dmitri was a true colleague. Again and again in recent days, people have spoken of his generosity with his time, his willingness to help and the fact that he so rarely said no when someone needed his support. Whether supporting lectures outside normal working hours, volunteering his expertise, joining colleagues for a Cúpan Tae, or simply stopping for a conversation, he contributed enormously to the life and community of DIAS.

Dmitri was a quiet and private man, a consummate professional and, always, a gentleman. Those who worked alongside him will remember his gentle nature, his kindness, his dry humour, his dedication and the warmth he showed to colleagues.

We will miss him greatly.

Our deepest sympathies are with Olga, Ilya, his beloved father Uri, and all of Dmitri’s family and friends. We hope they can take some comfort from knowing just how highly regarded and deeply appreciated he was by his colleagues throughout DIAS, and how fondly he will be remembered.

What exactly is an eclipse, and what can eclipses teach us about the Sun? 🌒☀️

DIAS researchers explain the science behind yesterday’s eclipse, from viewing the Sun safely using a telescope projection to some of the big questions we are still asking about our nearest star.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us at DIAS Dunsink Observatory yesterday. It was wonderful to welcome so many people and share both the experience of the eclipse and the science behind it.

Special thanks to @researchireland for supporting the event, and to ESERO Ireland for providing eclipse glasses to help our visitors view the eclipse safely 🕶️☀️

Today, as Ireland looked up at a partial solar eclipse, an Irish Air Corps C295 carried a team of scientists into the path of totality, approximately 350km off the west coast of Ireland, where the Moon completely covered the Sun.

On board, researchers from the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, Trinity College Dublin, TU Dublin and the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) operated the E-CorMag solar telescope, capturing rare images of the Sun's outer atmosphere during the fleeting moments of totality.

A flight planned to the minute and flown by our own crews from 101 Sqn, No. 1 Operations Wing, in a unique collaboration between Irish military aviation and international science. 🌘✈️ by @dias_dublin

Apollo 11 Moon Landing

The Apollo 11 Mission in July 1969 returned the first geological samples from the moon. Prof Denis O'Sullivan of DIAS, along with Prof Alex Thompson, developed innovative techniques to analyse Cosmic Ray tracks on the lunar rocks.

Their research gained international recognition for DIAS and Ireland, leading to Irish experiments in subsequent Apollo missions and establishing Ireland as a respected contributor to global space research.

John Herivel was a mathematician and one of the codebreakers at Bletchley Park during the Second World War.

He is best known for the "Herivel Tip" a breakthrough that became one of the key methods used to crack the German Enigma cipher in 1940.

In 1956, he joined the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) as a visiting scholar, becoming part of the Institute's distinguished tradition of mathematical
and scientific research.

In 2023, researchers from the DIAS Geophysics Section, working with international partners,
installed an induction coil magnetometer in Antarctica
to collect magnetic & electric field data.

The instrument measures the vertical component of Earth's magnetic field. By detecting subtle variations
in magnetic and electric fields across different frequencies, it helps researchers build a clearer
picture of what lies deep beneath the Earth's surface! 🤘
