A magnitude 6.9 earthquake occurred at Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula at 03:35 UTC time, today (16 October) at a depth of approximately 135 km.

Kamchatka lies along the Kuril Kamchatka subduction zone, where the Pacific Plate moves northwestwards at approximately 80 mm per year, descending beneath (pushed under) the North American Plate and adjacent smaller tectonic plates. This ongoing movement generates significant tectonic stress, resulting in frequent earthquakes and extensive volcanic activity.

The earthquake occurred within the same highly active tectonic region as the magnitude 8.8 earthquake of 29th July 2025, one of the largest recorded globally (joint 6th largest magnitude).

Beneath the ancient ruins of Nendrum Monastic Site, Co. Down, we came hoping to capture the Milky Way, but the clouds had other plans.

With a KP index of 7, the aurora forecast looked promising, although a northward Bz made the display less favourable. Yet, through a brief gap in the clouds, a beautiful green glow appeared on the distant horizon, a reminder that even an unpredictable night can offer something magical.

Ancient history beneath our feet, the Northern Lights on the horizon. Sometimes, the unexpected becomes the highlight of the night.

At 17:56:06 UTC on 9 October 2026, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake occurred approximately 12 km west-southwest of Pitaloza Arriba, in Herrera Province, Panama. The earthquake originated at a depth of 12.6 km.

The earthquake occurred within the tectonically active region of Central America, where the interaction of several tectonic plates contributes to seismic activity. The shallow depth and large magnitude resulted in strong ground shaking across parts of Panama, with shaking also reported in neighbouring countries.

Significant damage was reported in several areas of Panama, including structural damage to buildings. Tsunami alerts were issued for parts of the Pacific region following the earthquake. Several aftershocks were also recorded.

SPACE WEEK 2026 CHRONICLES:

On Monday, I joined @irelandamvmtv to talk about 2 things close to my heart:
@worldspaceweek and the stars we don’t all get to see.

DYK that there are more homeless children in Ireland than there are stars you can see with the naked eye (2,500)?
Over 5,500 children are currently living in temporary accommodation and this number continues to rise.

From space,
there are no countries,
no borders,
no need for money,
or trinkets and baubles.
Just land and sea.

And for those who have seen the Earth from a distance,
they understand that we are one species
of many other species
sharing this planet together
The only home we’ve ever known.

Seeing Earth from space feels as if anything is possible.

Here’s my question:
What incredible things can we do when we work together?
Can we ensure that every child has a home?

I’m proud to be the 2026 @focusirelandcharity ‘Shine a Light’ Ambassador. Tomorrow night, Fri Oct 9th, organisations and Irish people across the country will sleep out to raise funds and awareness of this current plight.

If you can, please donate or share this reel.
Every bit helps a family find a home.

Thanks again to @muireann.o, @tommybowe & all the IrelandAM for the great welcome and the platform to amplify Focus Irelands annual fundraising drive. My Mam & Dad loved the personal message too 🙏🏻

Two glorious days in Dublin to launch the new edition of the "Navigatio Sancti Brendani". A brilliant conference with currachs aplenty!

As well as sending a message of support to open the conference, Irish President Catherine Connolly gave a copy of the book to Donald Trump (as reported in the Irish Times). I wonder what he'll make of the 143-manuscript stemma codicum...

I had an absolutely brilliant time on Thursday in Dublin at a day of talks, film, singing and music - all about St Brendan the Navigator's famous 7 year voyage - his Navigatio.

Held at @dias_dublin by @scs.dias.

Met lovely people and had lots of my questions answered!

A magnitude 0.9 earthquake occurred in Northern Donegal on Monday the 21st of September 2026 at 16:03:55 UTC time and 17:03:55 Irish time (earthquakes are recorded in UTC time to avoid confusion with different time zones).

You can see the map with the location of the earthquake (red circle) and the hexagons are Raspberry Shake seismometers.

These are just some of our citizen seismometers that really nicely recorded this earthquake 😍

Thanks to all of our Raspberry Shake hosts 👏🏻
