“Dhamana utaweka nini?”

Kuwapa wote suluhu moja bila kuelewa tofauti hizo kunaweza kuacha changamoto zao bila majibu.

Last week, I spent two days in Zanzibar facilitating the CADiR Partners Training on Disability-Inclusive Communications, organised by the Norwegian Association of Disabled (NAD) Zanzibar Country Office.

Going into this training, I wanted us to reflect on a simple but important question: Are the messages we create and share truly reaching everyone, or are some people being left out without us even realising it?

As communicators, journalists and content creators, we often focus on the message, the visuals, the reach and the engagement. But how often do we stop to ask whether a person with a visual impairment can access our post, whether a deaf person can follow our video, or whether the language and images we use represent persons with disabilities with dignity?

We looked at understanding disability, identifying the barriers that exclude people, and using respectful language and representation.

Then we moved into the digital space. We explored how to make social media posts, videos, websites, emails and documents more accessible through simple language, image descriptions, captions, readable text and good colour contrast. Participants also had the opportunity to review communication materials and practise making them more inclusive.

We went a step further to discuss ethical storytelling. When sharing someone’s photograph or personal story, do we have their informed consent? Are we protecting their privacy and safety? Are we allowing them to tell their own stories, or are we speaking for them?

These conversations reinforced something I strongly believe in: inclusion is not just about giving people access; it is also about respecting their dignity, protecting their rights and involving them in decisions that affect them.

For me, one of the most important takeaways was that accessibility should not be something we remember at the end. It should be considered from the very beginning, when planning a story, designing a poster, recording a podcast, publishing a video or organising an event.

S/O to @nad_zanzibar for the opportunity to facilitate these sessions and contribute to strengthening disability-inclusive communication practices.

DO YOU REALLY HAVE A CHOICE ONLINE?

You click “I Agree” because you need the service. But does that mean you genuinely agree with the terms, or do you simply have no other option?

When accessing essential digital services means accepting terms you don’t understand or aren’t comfortable with, we need to ask: Is that meaningful consent, or are we just clicking to gain access?

Your personal data. Your privacy. Your rights. You deserve to understand what you’re agreeing to and have meaningful choices about how your information is used.

💬 Have you ever accepted terms and conditions simply because you had no other option?

Let’s talk about it and #MakeItMakeSense! 💡

There is something about seeing women find their voices, grow in confidence, and realise that they belong in every room where decisions are being made. It does something to my heart. ❤️

I had the pleasure of facilitating Module 12: Introduction to Advocacy and Digital Campaigning under the TuWezeshe Akina Dada Fellowship, organised by @cdf_tanzania

We spent time exploring advocacy, digital campaigning, and how we can use our voices and digital platforms to challenge issues, influence change, and make our communities better. Through discussions and group activities, we looked at how to move beyond simply talking about an issue to building campaigns that inspire people to listen, care, and take action.

But beyond the session itself, this experience reminded me of something deeply personal.

Training young women and fellow women is not just my passion; it is something my heart is deeply attached to. I love seeing women become louder about the things that matter. I love seeing them embrace growth, discover their potential, and become confident enough to take up space. And I especially love seeing women sitting at decision-making tables, not simply because they are women, but because they are knowledgeable, capable, and have something valuable to contribute.

I believe in a world where women don’t have to keep proving that they deserve to be heard. A world where our ideas, expertise, and leadership speak for themselves, and where we have the confidence and opportunities to shape the decisions that affect our lives.

As a journalist, digital rights advocate, and trainer, I believe that our voices are powerful, but when they are informed, strategic, and united, they can become catalysts for meaningful social change.

Every time I get an opportunity to share knowledge, mentor, or create room for another woman to grow, I see it as an investment in something bigger than myself.

To the TuWezeshe Akina Dada fellows, keep learning, keep growing, keep speaking up, and never shrink yourself to make others comfortable. There is room for you at the table, and your voice matters. ❤️

S/O to @cdf_tanzania for trusting me with this opportunity.

How can you give informed consent to something you don’t understand? 👀🔐

We click “I Agree” without reading, but does that mean we truly understand what we’re agreeing to?

Privacy policies shouldn’t feel like legal exams. If our data matters, understanding how it’s collected, used, and shared should be just as important.

Consent is more than a click. It’s about understanding your rights.

Let’s make privacy policies make sense!

Unaonaje?

Human rights and democracy can sound like big, distant concepts, until you realize they shape the opportunities, freedoms, information, and choices we encounter every day.

As a multimedia journalist and digital rights advocate, I believe that some of the most important conversations are often hidden behind complex language, making it difficult for ordinary people to see how these issues affect their lives. That’s why I was excited to join fellow creators from across Africa for a TikTok Live discussion under the #MakeItMakeSense campaign, a movement that seeks to translate complex issues into conversations everyone can understand, create around, and act on.

Our discussion, “Bringing Rights Into Focus,” explored a simple but powerful question:

What do human rights and democracy actually have to do with me?

The answer is simple: they’re not abstract concepts. They show up in our access to information, freedom of expression, digital spaces, education, participation, accountability, and the everyday decisions that shape our communities.

Thank you to everyone who joined the conversation, shared their perspectives, and reminded us why making these issues understandable and relatable matters.

💬 What human right are you bringing into focus today?
