Landkeeper exists somewhere between tool, body, guardian and technology, exploring our connection to what lies within and beyond what we perceive as “other”.

Inspired by the artist’s time around Lake Tuz, Turkey, the works emerged from an encounter with a fragile ecosystem where salt, flamingos and industrial extraction coexist. Steel and vacuum-sealed salt become transformed into instruments of extraction, care and stewardship.

Balancing between organic forms and technological structures, Landkeeper I & II reflect on the possibility of coexistence — and the relationship between the human body, landscape and the systems we create to protect or transform it.

𝐋𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐓𝐮𝐳 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬, 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔

This year, I made repeated visits to Lake Tuz in Central Anatolia, Turkey— a landscape where the horizon dissolves into a mirror of earth and sky.

I was around seven years old when I first ran across the salt flats. It stayed with me as a memory of another planet. Now I am 28, and I keep searching for that same boundless mind, when I lived not just as myself, but as though the whole world lived inside me.

It was the darkest night of the year when I began my drive from Ankara. I greeted the first rays of light as I arrived at the lake’s infinite mirror. As the boundaries of the landscape began to dissolve, so did the boundaries of my physical and psychic body. Entering into the wider body of the landscape, this altered state became a form of dreaming—not dreaming in sleep, but dreaming with the landscape.

Landkeepers exist somewhere between tool, body, guardian, and technology; seeking to connect us to what lies within, beyond, or appears as “other” to ourselves.

I spent time along Lake Tuz, situated in Central Anatolia. It is a fragile ecosystem in drought, barely surviving as a flamingo breeding ground, while simultaneously remaining a major site of salt extraction in the region.

Within the dissonant sounds of steel and a vacuumed silence, everything held the potential to be transformed into either instruments of extraction or forms of care and stewardship. It was through this possibility that the figure of the Landkeeper emerges.
