At first glance, the artwork looks like a collage of door frames, architecture and trees. However, look closer and you see each one carrying its own quiet story. Dilip Chobisa’s Mountain of Pride 14 is a rhythmic meditation on scale and texture. The twenty-four-tile grid feels like a gentle inventory of belonging, built from materials as grounded as the memories they hold.

On view now at 1X1, Dilip Chobisa’s (@dilipchobisa) “Dual Dialogues A & B" (2025) sets two works in quiet conversation with one another. Rendered in dry pastel and graphite on canvas, the pieces hold a tension between mark and absence, between what is drawn and what is withheld.

Last few days to see the works on view as part of our group show 'The Cage Went in Search of a Bird,' open daily from 10 AM to 7 PM at 1X1 Art Gallery, Alserkal Avenue, Dubai. taken in 1X1 by @dilipchobisa

Dilip Chobisa’s (@dilipchobisa) constructed neighbourhoods are strangely dystopic, using a chiaroscuro of shadow and light to pull apart the familiarity of inhabited spaces from the foreboding and mystery of abandonment. His series *Who owns it? (2024)* signals an absent presence — not only of authorship, but of control. These works place the viewer in the uneasy position of trespasser, a sensation that spreads in concentric ripples of apprehension.

Chobisa’s practice draws from the built environment of small-town India. A defining feature of his paintings, relief drawings and sculptures is their rigorous materiality: the iron of window grilles, the stone of the floors, the texture of painted walls, each meticulously recreated. In contrast stands his oblique perspective. Structures are never shown in full; instead, a muted palette heightens the interplay of form, space and light. The absence of human figures further amplifies a sense of spatial displacement and indeterminacy.

Through Dilip Chobisa’s constructed rendition of the mystery, the idea of the hidden is formed by what is revealed. This is achieved by way of a curtain, a hallway, a beam of light or a suggestive stairway. He disregards the laws of architecture, yet creates an order of intrigue and curiosity. His drawings are de ned by light or the lack of it, suggesting dark silences and pronounced emptiness. He challenges the limits of perception and makes visible the possibility of a space beyond the de ned. He also dabbles with photography.

Dilip has participated in several group shows including Working Space— around memory and perception, curated by Roobina Karode and presented by Paradox and 1×1 Gallery, Singapore; In you is the Illusion of Each Day, curated by Maya Kovskaya in Latitude 28 [2011]; Aicon Gallery, London [2010]. He has also shown at the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, New Delhi; Leila Heller Gallery, New York; Gallery Espace, Delhi to name a few. His public art projects include the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport Commission, Mumbai [2013] and the Indira Gandhi International Airport Commission, New Delhi [2011]. He has been the recipient of the Harmony Art Foundation Emerging Artist award of the Year, 2008. The Devi Art Foundation, the R.P.G Collection, Harmony Art Foundation, Uttrayan Foundation, Patrons of Tel Aviv Museum, the Gwangju Museum of Art and several other private and public enterprises have collected his work.

“At the AD Design Show, Dilip Chobisa’s sculptural installation stood like a 6x4ft mosaic of vignettes and vistas. Titled ‘Mountain of Pride’, Chobisa creates an amalgam of materials to give us juxtapositions that look like postcards from the past.

Chobisa shares that he created it thinking of the past in terms of human experience and memory. This sculptural work made of epoxy resin, cement, pigments and earthen colours makes us consider the implications of our relationship with architecture and the built environment…

In this work we see an artist’s ability to socially envelop audiences and encourage us to slow down our daily pace, pay attention to the finer details of the built environment and, perhaps, even reevaluate human responsibilities to one another as we all co-inhabit public spaces all over the world.”

Baroda-based Chobisa’s art practice engages with the poetics of built space, especially the vernacular architecture one sees all over rural India and in the old quarters of cities - low-rise structures characterised by domed roofs, arched doorways, ornamental window grilles and cement mosaic floors.
For Chobisa, the ordering and construction of spaces and the elements of a structure are extensions of the human psyche and manifestations of social hierarchy. He reproduces them in his artworks, coloured by nostalgia and shaded by chiaroscuro, their forms and textures recreated painstakingly with precise attention to verisimilitude.

Dilip Chobisa is an alumnus of the MS University in Baroda. He has been a part of several solo and group exhibitions, noteworthy among which are ‘Working Space-around memory and perception’ (2015) at Kiran Nadar Museum of Art; ‘Ethereal’ (2014) at Leila Heller Gallery, London; and ‘Fragile’ (2012) at Paradox Gallery, Singapore. He has executed public art projects at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport Commission, Mumbai [2013] and Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi [2011]. He was awarded the Harmony Art Foundation Emerging Artist of the Year in 2008. His works are in the collections of Devi Art Foundation, the R.P.G Collection, Harmony Art Foundation, Uttrayan Foundation, Patrons of Tel Aviv Museum, and Gwangju Museum of Art, among others. by @dilipchobisa
