On the first day of the new year, Joe and I signed up for the Moab 240, believing that if we were together, surrounded by our Tribe, we could do anything- even run 240 miles in the Moab desert.
It was only this time last year that we finished the South to North Double Marathon and gave name to the effect we had, which was Tribe.
Joe died 2 weeks before the Moab race but I knew I had to do this race for both me and for Joe now.
This race took everything I had and it even took the energy from others so that I could finish. My pacers, my crew, my crew chief, and all of the support I had across the seas held me as I walked, ran, and crawled day and night through the desert.
I gave up and doubted myself every day of the race. It truly tested my faith.
Hallucinations from deep exhaustion clouded my brain; aching hips and bruised feet from pounding on the ground became a dull but simple reminder I was alive. Shin splints made me hold my breath and I didn’t know if I could make it
I ran in the rain, in the desert heat and in the freezing cold. I just got over Covid 3 months prior and this race had me at 8,500 feet elevation after training in Hawaii at sea level.
The odds were deeply against me and I felt comfort in using these excuses if I decided to give up. At mile 70, I was done. But as I sat down to give up, my tribe stood up to push me through. Timbo ran day into night with me for a total of 100 miles, then Cam came along to get me a speedy 18 miles. John locked it down with a starry night marathon, and the love of my life sent me home with the last 20 miles to finish the race together. It was powerful to have all these amazing people surround me, especially Margot, Kat, Julian, and Adam who remained as my crew to give me the love and support to make it through.
Finally, my international Tribe supported me with all of your loving messages and even donations of money to help me with expenses of traveling.
Joe smiled down upon me when I was begging for his help. He let me struggle through it because he knew I could do it, but I did feel his soul within me as I ran every mile.

Ewa to Everest.

It feels kind of surreal to be the first [male] CHamoru at Everest Base Camp. There were many instances where I told myself, “my ancestors are seafarers; I’m an Islander! There’s no way I should be up this high, with so little oxygen- it’s too fucking cold.” I felt like I had many excuses to not do this trek and to not make Everest Region my home for the next 2 months; however, instead, I made all the excuses to make this work.

It’s as if I have found the nexus in my life as a Mountaineer from Western Colorado University, a Peace Corps Nepal volunteer, and a manic with a weird itch to do things that makes me feel a little uncomfortable.

Acting as my own guide during the Everest Base Camp Trek has felt very empowering and stands testimony to the hundreds of hours of class and self study I have done to have gained adequate Nepali language skills.

The Everest Ultra Marathon is 52 days away, and I’m excited to see how my lungs can keep up at 17,598 feet!

Thank you to all who have been supporting me along this road (you know who you are😉)

Best believe I had the most satisfying Cheehoo from the base of the tallest mountain in the world.

Thank you @zaneangeles for believing in me and allowing me to show you this wonderful country. I love you brother

I prayed to find someone who was worthy of the love I give. I found this curly headed poof ball In the back of Manoa Valley singing to her plants and dancing to the rainbows. A year with Kes has taught me a lot about the love I give and the love I receive.

We aim to be 1% better everyday together. The world is a better place when humans love, so in loving each other, we better the world.

More days to come in bettering the world in loving you. Happy anniversary, Kestrel by @dill_daddy
