A short yet memorable Cali trip. Beautiful landscapes, endless possibilities for exploration and fantastic people.

Flanked on either side by visits to two of my favorite wineries @ridgevineyards @santacruzmountainvineyard there was the small matter of the @santarosamarathon on Sunday, 23 August.

My objective was to get to the line ready to help @david_kohnert run well. Set a rhythm and stay with it as long as I could - 14 miles would be great, I thought. I knew he was ready to excel at 26.2, but was far less sure of myself. Adding to my uncertainty about cramps, stitches, etc, a hip issue came seemingly out of nowhere 12 days before race day. The idea of pulling out hung over me right up to Saturday. A frantic PT visit three days out helped ease some nerves, but also put the ridiculousness of what I was doing in perspective. Thank you @runlabaustin

Somehow, once David and I set off, particularly after the chaos of the initial miles, we settled into a groove for the remainder of the race. Moments of discomfort and alarm (“is it a cramp?” around 14; oncoming runners at 20-23) came and went. I needed every last salt tablet I had, and made a spectacle of myself at most of the water stops. But a crucial moment came near mile 18, when David said to me “we’re finishing this thing together”. Even though we were a long way out (8 miles from the end of a marathon is MUCH farther than just 8 miles), I knew he was right. By 20, things started hurting and the legs got heavy, but we urged each other on. Once the oncoming crowds thinned out, we had a little less than 5k left. “Two more miles,” I said. (The last mile would barely register.) There was extra energy in our step as we made our way through downtown, rounding the turn toward the finish. The yell I let out when we crossed the line together was many things - defiance, disbelief; but mostly joy at having pulled off as successful a collaborative effort as I can recall.

I tend to over-romanticize California. I know I am still me after this race and this trip, but as ever, I’d like to think I’ve grown. Can’t wait to come back to keep exploring, and grateful to this trip for reminding me about the things that matter. by @dima_krasny_

Per well-established tradition, this is a belated birthday post, mostly because I can’t get my act together. But this is not about me - this is about one of the kindest, wisest, fearless and most dedicated people I know. (And she’s my sistercousin!) Whether it’s raising thoughtful and whip-smart son, being the best daughter (tied for 1st with @elveerai ) or lifting everyone’s spirits by simply walking into the room, everything about @msfaeena draws us in. It’s been a treat and a privilege to look up to and learn from you. Love you Fai! Hope you have a… um… I mean had a happy birthday. In loving memory of Lev Aronovich Krasny, who passed away on 17 April, 1996. A WWII Veteran and respected pediatrician during his career, he was most importantly - and the way I principally remember him - a man of unmatched kindness, love and goodwill. The more time passes, the more I cannot help but think I am but a shadow of a man compared to him. But this is a primitive view, and he, in his infinite wisdom and kindness, would likely be the first to tell me to see things in a more forgiving and holistic way. My memories with him extend only to age seven, and yet I miss him intensely and know I could use his presence in my life. We all could. Here’s to making his memory a blessing every day. by @dima_krasny_

Happy birthday to an N of 1… the embodiment of class, passion, hospitality and creativity. Always up for my outrageous on-the-fly mods, tincture experiments, avoiding the paparazzi and deep philosophical rabbit holes. Most significantly, no one I know gets more pure joy out of creating for the enjoyment of others. Sucks that we currently find ourselves living in different time zones, but I am grateful for our friendship and know that bond is for good.
