Townes was a defining figure in the history of the Kerrville Folk Festival, helping shape the early roots and spirit of the iconic Texas gathering.
Decades after his passing, he remains a central pillar of Texas songwriting lore at Kerrville, often honored alongside close contemporaries like Guy Clark in festival tributes and retrospectives.

Remembering Chuck Berry (October 18, 1926 – March 18, 2017) was an American singer, guitarist and songwriter who pioneered rock and roll. Nicknamed the "Father of Rock and Roll", he refined and developed rhythm and blues into the major elements that made rock and roll distinctive with songs such as "Maybellene" (1955), "Roll Over Beethoven" (1956), "Rock and Roll Music" (1957), and "Johnny B. Goode" (1958). Writing lyrics that focused on teen life and consumerism, and developing a music style that included guitar solos and showmanship, Berry was a major influence on subsequent rock music.

“The Things That I Used to Do" is a classic blues song written and originally recorded by Guitar Slim (Eddie Jones) in 1953

The singer begs Death for the chance to live longer, but Death refuses. The singer realizes they are condemned to hell.

The song was allegedly written by Berzilla Wallin's brother, the Baptist preacher and folk singer Lloyd Chandler (1896-1978). However, it seems to have been based on a pre-existing Appalachian folk song which may have its origins in a British ballad.

Another variant of the song, with the chorus Oh Death, Whoah Death, Won't you spare me over for another year? was performed by traditional Appalachian musicians including Dock Boggs (1898-1971) and Nimrod Workman (1895-1994). This variant gained recent popularity after it was sung by Ralph Stanley in the comedy-drama film O Brother, where art thou?.

from the 1969 film “The End of an Old Song”, which you can watch through a link and my story.

"Filmed in the mountains of North Carolina, this acclaimed documentary revisits the region where English folklorist Cecil Sharp collected British ballads in the early 1900s. The film features Dillard Chandler, who sings with rare intensity and style. Filmmaker John Cohen contrasts the nature of the ballad singers with the presence of the juke box: although the lyrical tradition has changed, the singing style continues."
