Side hustle #2: OPEN WITH LEFT HAND ✋
Dina Danish 📅 Friday 16 October, 17:00

Ten years in the making. Almost finished. Zero images. And it will never be published.

Dina Danish has been working on Open with Left Hand (designed by Felix Salut) for more than ten years. It began as an attempt to document her work without a single image, and it has resisted completion ever since: endless revisions, a constrained vocabulary, and lately, AI.

So instead of waiting for the book, Dina brings it to life. Come and hear her read performative passages and the introduction by philosopher Graham Harman, followed by an invisible signing of a book you can’t buy. 🖋️

Possible guests: Felix Salut, Dorothe Orczyk and perhaps Graham Harman himself.

Tomorrow, 17:00. Bring a pen. Or don’t. by @dina.danish

In Cairo’s historic tent making district, artisans have sewn Khayameyya appliqué for centuries , vast hand-stitched canvases once made for weddings, mourning and celebration.

Dina Danish borrows this language for something else entirely: the news cycle. (Anonymous) portraits of world leaders. Straits closed by war. Diplomatic tables where nothing gets resolved.

Her solo show Ships and Multilateral Meetings turns what flashes past in a feed into something built to last. by @dina.danish

THE GATHERERS, 2026

I vaguely recall a boat stuck in a canal. I vaguely recall a boat in a canal carrying crops, or something like crops, perhaps wheat, perhaps other stuff. Stuff gathered by hands in a manner similar to how it may have been gathered a few years ago, or two years ago or three thousand (s) of years ago.

Three months of stretching one thread while sewing it down with another. Three months of traveling back and forth to work with them. Hand sewn in Cairo with the help of Khayameyya master Mohamed Amin and his daughter Malak Amin @malak.amin.5680899

❕SAVE THE DATE: Gypsum is excited to announce a collaboration with Sargent’s Daughters, presenting an exhibition in their lower-level space in New York. The limited-run show, “The Bestiary,” marks Gypsum’s first exhibition in New York and opens on May 15 in conjunction with Tribeca Gallery Night.

“The Bestiary” brings together three Egyptian artists from Gypsum’s roster–Dina Danish, Huda Lutfi, and Mohamed Monaiseer–whose works reach into medieval craft histories to reflect on contemporary personal, historical, and political narratives.

This invitation was sparked by conversations between the gallerists at Art Basel Qatar, where they discussed a shared desire to find new modes of working together across regions.

The wait is over! As promised, we're unveiling one of the most magical things we've worked on - Egyptian blue, glowing under infrared light! A pigment that stood the test of time, first made over 3000 years ago. We've recreated it in our Cairo studio using basic materials and a regular pottery kiln. What can't be seen by the naked eye reveals its magic under infrared. Part of our ongoing research in experimental archeology and art practice. #egyptianblue #egyptology Special thanks to the @mondriaanfonds @john_ocarroll_studio taken in Fustat by @dina.danish
